Fractal Audio Firmware Update Thread

Will this ever come to the FM3?
Yup, be nice to know. And if not I think really solidifies the argument for an FM3 (turbo?) that is at the same general level of capability and received attention (USB) as the other models. The footprint size is the primary draw for some of us.

It just hit the flagship for Beta… seriously? ^^^

I think folks saying that Cliff just took off for a long welcome vacation.

If you wanna enjoy these things… Pony up!

(I trust FAS to adopt this paradigm for their whole platform btw)

FM3 owners be like.

So I gave the new Axe-Edit and Dyna-Cabs a spin. Found some small bugs in Axe-Edit (reported on FAS forums) but mostly it worked well.

The Dyna-cabs themselves sound fantastic! I can't also overstate how big a workflow improvement this is because I was able to try out different cabs with the same mic settings very quickly to find out things I liked and then fine tune those just by dragging the mic controls around a bit. If the "Authentic" tab for Amp block was the "make it easy for users", then Dyna-cabs does the same for the cabs.

If you ask me, Fractal should throw out the legacy IR banks and replace them with Dyna-cabs, use the storage saved for something else - like more Dyna-cabs! Make the old factory IRs downloadable files for those who need them.
Yes, throwing out the legacy banks would be a HUGE workflow improvement for folks that have already sorted through the Fractal IRs and found exactly what they want...

One area I will firmly be out of step with a lot of Axe FX 3 owners is the idea that FM owners should wait in line for updates. Understanding that this is a beta release, and that we may not see an official release for several weeks. But I really hope the FM release won't be too far behind.

As an FM3 owner I am good with whatever happens. No beef. No axe to grind. No sense of
abandonment or neglect. :whistle

It's epic as it is, and what happens happens. :beer

I understand the trickle-down approach. If they can shoehorn more updates like this into that
smaller architecture fine. If not then I will be shopping. I just like to joke about it, because
10 seconds after a new firmware release people are tossing the question out there. Repeatedly.

This strikes me as something that would make far more sense to run externally on a computer - you can download and audition appropriate cabs and mic positoons, and then from there decide which ones are loaded on to HW (and in what resolution for interpolation). Do all users require all cabs/mics/positions taking up space on their device?
This is basically what Edit does for 3rd party IRs, so it's a natural step to include that capability for 3rd parties creating Dyna-Cab IRs. Fractal already announced that the robot and software are available.

The other units occasionally get the latest thing first, but, generally, they flow downhill. The FX3 is Cliff's playground of choice so when he gets it working there it's handed off to the other developers to implement on their hardware. And because they're on different hardware and the DSP are from a different company, there's some tweaking that occurs.

I suspect, with something this big, it's going to roll to the FM* units too, it's just when is the question. Soon is the answer. Always.

Yes.

Tomorrow's news:

Fractal Audio announced the next generation of digital modeling devices today. This new series, called IGN, an initialism for "Instant Gratification Now" is already on its way to future purchasers who don't know they want it. Yet.

I’d assume at this point FAS knows if it’ll work in the FM3/FM9 or not and it’s just a matter of doing the work to make it happen.

I think it’s safe to say the BIG updates will always hit the III first, but we’ve already seen some mixing up of updates among the 3 units with the FM’s getting a pedal or amp (can’t remember) before the III did. So I’d imagine the smaller stuff that’s already been introduced to the system can go right to the FM’s, but bigger ticket items need to spend some time in the III before going out to the masses.

In the end this is really just a fancy IR chooser reading conventional IR's, no? So it seems that there's a good chance at having the same amount of choices in the FM3 and FM9 as we already have. Of course there's a lot of programming to do to get it on the units and updating the editors.

No. Traditional IRs will not work with the Dyna-Cab code, these are a whole new thing. There's a separate loader to install the Dyna-Cab IRs into the modeler. You can combine traditional IRs with Dyna-Cab IRs but they're different creatures.

Other companies have something similar, but their IRs lack the granularity needed.
