Fractal Audio Firmware Update Thread

Man, I can’t tell if ya’ll are having a little forum tiff or not.

As mentioned elsewhere and by others, I would LOVE an “easy/authentic” mode on delays and modulations. And a single Modulation knob on delays, like on Helix's Transistor Tape, would be awesome.

100% agree, it would be awesome to have an "Easy" tab on a lot of the blocks. Especially for quick dialing on the interface of the unit.

Totally agree. They do have more simplified “tabs” but i tend to go into the other tabs and start try stuff so say… No well what doesn’t do much.

As much I as I think Fractal stuff sounds really good, the interface on the unit and computer editor makes me feel like I’m using my 3D design and animation software than something a regular guitar player would get on with. Since I use software like that I’m used to it but when I play guitar I don’t want a bunch stuff in my face that really doesn’t matter. I don’t won’t that in my work software either honestly. Give me the tools I need and nothing more. I don’t need to have all the access to the parts of an air hammer. I just need to load the nails, hose and trigger get on making shit. Honestly those deep parameters IME make very little difference getting you great tone. YMMV. It’s the amp model and the IR that make the biggest differences.

Some people due to how they’re wired like to filter options to help with option paralysis… why not get out the 80’s rack gear aesthetic and move towards something that fits the most modern players. Makes more economical sense from a sales point of view because you attract other people than tweak heads. That’s one thing I think other modeler options do a better job at.

Again for all those sensitive types. I like Fractal… I own Fractal I just think it could be vastly improved in other areas. That’s by no means makes me a Fractal hater…. that’s just fanboy BS.

What the various settings do well are to provide the opportunity to get to just about any specific tone someone has in mind. The extra level of control is a feature, and not a requirement to use the device

Yeah for me it's not so much "AAGHH there's so many options I have to adjust every one" as much as when I'm using the device directly (no Axe Edit) and don't want to go through several pages to adjust a handful of common parameters.

I'm sure there's a point of that making things more complex (which parameters do you want here?), but any time it can be simplified is good.

There's got to be some clever way to improve the UI a bit without a hardware overhaul.

Here, I'll program a patch from scratch real quick and see what's a bit limiting:
  • New patch, I have to put input and output blocks and connect them all. Maybe we could create and store templates for new presets? Maybe add a tab beyond "Tools" where you can select from a template list?
  • Amp looks good, although I think it would be neat to have a tab beyond "Tone" where we could user assign controls (like the performance controls). Things like bright switch/cap, input low/high cut, boost, etc all on one page.
  • Cabs, not sure how you would do this but it would be nice to have the global high/low cuts on the first tab. But you're kind of full up on space with the four cab selection.
  • Reverb, I never touch crossover frequencies or low/high frequency time. I would rather have a tone control or high/low cuts there. Same thing with a modulation control, that would be great. Basically make it more like a Strymon unit on the front page. Also, may be nice to have a series/parallel switch on there (which also changes the default mix and level controls as well as bypass to mute input).
  • Delay, not sure why there's time/feedback and master time/feedback on the same page. Would rather have a tone control or high/low cuts on there, again like a Strymon unit. May also like LFO rate/depth changed to Mod rate/depth (just sounds better). If there's space, a drive control may be nice too. And a series/parallel switch.
Maybe that's a conflict between the old authentic vs ideal tab, and maybe it's just more wanting user assigned fields?

Never said you did.
It really does get in the way for some people’s personality. Sorry the idea those deep parameters do much to really change the tone is IME ridiculous. If you like to tweak and have golden ears then I’m sure you might disagree.

You just threw out a false set of options.

It must be like being color blind huh, not able to hear?

This is the eternal balancing act of offering something that is easy to work with and something that has a big amount of features. Offer too little and people ask for more, offer too much and people ask for ways to hide stuff.

Fractal has succeeded really well with the "Authentic" view for its amp models and their editor design. After using the IK ToneX app for some days now I have grown a new appreciation for Axe-Edit.

You could do this by just storing a few template presets and copying those to a new slot. Possible with the onboard UI too.
  • Amp looks good, although I think it would be neat to have a tab beyond "Tone" where we could user assign controls (like the performance controls). Things like bright switch/cap, input low/high cut, boost, etc all on one page.
This is really the "Ideal" page of the Amp block, but only Axe-Edit can show both. On onboard UI you need to choose one or the other though I think you can find the rest in the Advanced section on the last page.
  • Cabs, not sure how you would do this but it would be nice to have the global high/low cuts on the first tab. But you're kind of full up on space with the four cab selection.
Going to the Preamp tab for these is not too much of a chore though but I do agree, would be nice.

Yeah I'd replace the crossover etc stuff with the high/low cut from the EQ page any day. Also agree on the series/parallel switch.

I guess they wanted to offer more options for stereo. I agree that it's not a feature set most people are looking for when they see a delay.
