TGF Do Something Weekly Challenge Week 1 Thread

So this was suppose to go on my youtube channel but the good people of Toho really like to block all things Zilla-ish... oh well. Here is my take on Drew's thrash drums. Good lord @DrewJD82 I think there needs to be more time changes in that file btw lol... also had to slow it down from 210 bps to 200... I'm getting too old for this sheeyit lol.

Can't listen now but I know this rips. I futzed with this yesterday and got to a generally good spot until about 46 seconds where the syncopated drum chunks were like 7 hits instead of 4 which blew my riff out of the water :cuss:roflI could have went to Pantera mode where they do dumb stuff like that all the time but decided to use the rock beat instead and embrace the old man groove

:rollsafe

That’s funny, while getting ready for work this morning I was thinking of doing exactly that!
I'd ask if we just became BFFs, but we answered that questions years ago... :rofl speaking of which, where's the hot pink Warlock?

….sitting in a corner unfinished. It’s hard to put time into it when I have all these other awesome guitars begging for attention! Every time I look at it I think “Oh yeah, I forgot I had that. Really should get that finished off….”

Woohoo I'm doing something!

I got EZ Drummer 2 installed which I had bought to start making more music...five years ago...whoops. Better late that never.

Was able to actually easily drag in the MIDI tracks to Garageband and it works right out of the box with EZ Drummer! So now I can edit the MIDI and adjust the tempo if I want.

Got a scratch track recorded with some ideas, and will come back later on to flesh it out. I'll even be able to dust off the old bass guitar too.

This will be fun, and exactly the push I need to start doing more. I'll be able to learn the software better so I can start trigger my e-kit and getting back into things.

Thanks for getting this going Drew!

Awesome!!!!! No thanks needed! I’m so stoked that this is getting people to dust off unused gear and getting everyone to push themselves a little bit!

And yeah, that’s exactly how I do all my drum tracks, just dragging the MIDI’s out of EZD/SD3 into the track itself. I can’t remember if it works on Garageband this way, but on Logic you can open the piano roll to edit the MIDI’s.

The challenge is to push yourself to do a little more than your normal thing, some of you will have to learn how to use a DAW, some of you will have to look at less porn and play more guitar...

Seriously, though, I may try to engage. I haven't recorded anything in forever. Do I understand correctly that we can submit on some weeks but perhaps miss others, with the only caveat being that we'll score fewer "points"? And do I assume correctly that the use of the drum tracks you provided is optional?

Okay, here's my submission:

Started writing/recording on Saturday, finished up recording vocals and mixing this morning (Sunday).

Gear used: 2012 Mac Mini with Reaper Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Gen2, 22 DAW tracks total - 3 of which are Parent/Master tracks.

Guitar: Ibanez Prestige AZ2402-PWF - 6 tracks, 3 DI tracks using Helix Native and three live recorded tracks using an HX Stomp and when needed - my Creambackatana for feedback in the room.
  1. Rhythm L: Horizon Drive - Placater Dirty - Dual GB25 4x12 cabs using 57/121 mics (50% L)
  2. Rhythm R: Horizon Drive - Badonk - Dual Cali V30 4x12 cabs using 47FET/SM7 mics (50% R)
  3. Lead R: Horizon Drive - Badonk - Dual Cali V30 4x12 cabs using 47FET/SM7 mics (40% R)
  4. Lead L: (Tracked live with HX Stomp) Wah - Dlx. Comp. - Essex A30 - Alex Cab Heavy Cream 3 IR - Transistor Tape and Dynamic Plate used for the spacey outro. (40% L)
  5. Fuzz 1 (Tracked Live with Stomp) Dlux Comp - KWB - A30 - Heavy Cream 3 IR (Center)
  6. Fuzz 2 (Tracked Live with Stomp) Dlux Comp - "Ring Fuzz" (Bighorn Fuzz/Pitch Ring Mod) - US Princess - Heavy Cream 3 IR (Center)
Bass: Ibanez TMB100 - 2 Tracks, both DI with Helix Native.
  1. Bass Dirt: Vital Dist (Parallel) - 60s Bias Trem - Ampeg SVT-4 PRO - Script Mod Phase
  2. Bass Clean - Factory 1 Preset 036 - BAS:Cougar 800 + High shelf boost +6.2db @ 2kHz
Drums are my Pearl Roadshow kit, sh*tty stock snare head that I need to change, 14" Zildjian A Custom Projection Hats, 17" Zildjian Z Custom Rock Crash, and augmented with XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2. Mics on drums are from a $300 Samson Drum mic kit with a Shure SM57 on snare. Waves CLA-2A on the dual overhead mics, FF Pro-Q 3 and Saturn on the snare. Waves H-Reverb added to the last tom hits at the end.

The Snare is blended about 50% with a sample from AD2 using some room reverb. Kick is blended about 50% with a sample from AD2 as well. Rack and floor tom are 100% replaced -- all using Audio to MIDI plugin.

Three tracks of Vocals - recorded with a handheld SM57, processed with Waves CLA-2A, some Low cut from FF Pro-q 3, and driven with the Warm Tape setting in FF Saturn, with some H-Reverb for the end parts.

Waves MetaFlanger on the mix bus for the intro (along with some bandpass filtering). and some subtle flanging on the outro.

First time actually trying vocals in this style. The lyrics are inspired by my trippy dreams, practicing lucid dreaming, and living with medication.

You’re understanding correctly all over!

There are two challenges going on simultaneously; a weekly challenge and a bi-weekly. But really, you can jump in at any time! I just put the drum tracks up for those who wanted something to use without spending a ton of time figuring out how to get them on their own. You can do whatever you wish!

Ok, I'm not gonna have time to do anything original this week, but I didn't want to miss out on the first week submission, so here's a cover of one of my all-time favorite songs I threw together this morning.

The drums are one of the GarageBand automated drummers

Everything else you hear is:
- Gibson Les Paul Standard
- Marshall DSL40CR
- York Audio IRs (Matchless 212 + Bassman 410)

Reverb, compression, and delay are from GarageBand

Even though it's not an original, I still learned a ton from doing this. Every time I record I'm reminded of what a horrible tendency I have to push and be in front of the beat.. I need to work on my timing in general. This was a really good reminder of that.

The hardest part to record was actually the rhythm guitar that's just plunking out chords under the whole song. Keeping that steady was challenging. At first I tried to do it in sections, but I realized there was too much discrepancy if I didn't do it all through in one take.

Another thing I'm learning listening back to this is that my reference headphones are super bass heavy so this sounds WAY thinner and brighter than what I thought I was mixing. Definitely something I'll have to keep in mind next time

I can’t listen to this very loud at work, so I’ll give it another spin when I get home. Sounds great from what I could hear, though!! Some really nice runs in there!

And yeah, I used to do everything in sections or just punch in from one section to the next and while I can edit things nicely enough where no one could tell, there’s a different feel to it if you go from start to finish. Especially when it‘s something I can barely play at tempo and I’m just praying for the end to come faster so my wrist doesn’t snap. :ROFLMAO:

Learning your room and the differences in your reference speakers goes a LONG way. It’s hard retaining that information if you’re not doing it regularly, too. There’s a couple things like that in my room I need to take account for and I get pissed at myself whenever I forget.

Thanks for submitting, man!!!

Really nice! That acoustic sounds killer. Great playing, great tone.

That is some killer thrash riffing! And I love that you took it to the next level by adding video. Nice work

Good stuff! Great change of pace from most of the other submissions too. And, it's inspiring how self-aware you are and how much effort you're putting into growing where you feel you should. My only mixing tip: I learned a long time ago to get it where I like it, then go find the crappiest sound source possible and listen to it there... then go back and tweak accordingly. If it sounds decent in my car with crap stock Honda stereo system, it sounds KILLER through my reference monitors.

I am loving this so much. Makes me miss my Grandma, and long for simpler times. I say that in the most
heartfelt and humble way imaginable.

Oh, and "thinner" and "brighter" kind of fits the period. Not a lot of thumping low-end in that style. It works.

I was thinking of tossing in something with some 7s and 9s. I figured that the music may slant more metal and
rock here, too.

Everyone is killing it!!! :beer

Oh, and I swear I have never heard a Marshall sound like that----at least NOT a DSL!

Hmm... See if this works? I'll try to fix everything later... got to make dinner and feed childrens and stuff... :bag

Holy Hell! We have a Mother FAKA! on the scene. :headbang

Holy fuck dude. You should call Papa Het and tell him you have some sweeter riffs he can borrow. :love

That was/is amazing!

I am discovering that the longer you wait to get in the water the more awkward you feel disrobing pool-side and
revealing to the rest of the crew your well-nourished Dad Bod. :idk

That's why I'm planning to go into the hot tub.

So my first few tracks I put down I did Helix Native to "keep my options open" but I don't like the sound at all. I may just ran everything through the Axe FX 3. Then I can focus on just trying to write and play the tracks instead of tone.
