TGF Do Something Weekly Challenge Week 1 Thread

Wow - strong first post!! Welcome to the forum - hope you stick around.

Loved your song - and playing. Was that fingerpicking in standard tuning? Sounded great and really pretty. I also thought the solo really fit the song well too. And that little run at 2:38 was awesome!

Thank you! I'm using a capo on the 2nd fret, acoustic is in standard tuning.

You never disappoint, brother!!!

I’m lucky if I can pull off one brutal song a year and you can just pump ‘em out like it’s nothin. Gaddamn!

Seriously, you’re guitar sounds like the strings are made from the suspension cables they use to hold up telephone poles, except they’re wrapped in barbed wire and fly off the guitar to decapitate people and chop bodies in half and sh*t. It’s glorious.

Welcome and wow! Way to make an entrance! That Takamine sounds amazing. Is it running straight in or are you using a Native preset? If Native, which one/how did you set it up?

And, definitely stick around and post another next week!

That was sick -- I love getting caught off guard by clean parts interrupted by heavy parts and then syncopation, then cool riff, fill -- it's ear candy all laid out tastefully.

Thanks! I'm running it direct to my Focusrite and using Native to shape the tone. My preset is Studio Tube Pre - 10 band EQ - Acoustic IR ( found this on the web years ago, I think someone extracted it from the Fishman Aura ) - Hall Reverb - LA Studio Comp

Wow! Well done! In the words of Doug Marcaida - "Overall, this track... will KILL!"

Thanks for that info, it sounds great. I've only had my Helix Rack since last summer and haven't really dialed in a great clean tone yet. So, any tips on that are definitely appreciated. I do have one or two of the factory presets saved, and I built one using the clean channel on a JCM, but yours is light years better sounding... I'm sure the Takamine and your skill/technique help a lot too.

Nice track sir, bass was BRUTAL.
Thank you sir. Glad you like it. I've always absolutely loved Jo Bench's tone and the way her bass lines just sound like a huge extension of the guitars in Bolt Thrower. The deeper I dove into that, the more I read stuff saying her and the guitar players all used Marshall Power Amps, then shaped their tones from there. This led me to try using guitar amp sims for bass, then using bass cabs. The guitar amp sim puts out way more gain and a gain that matches the guitar gain, then the bass cab reigns it back in and fills out all the bottom end.
That was sick -- I love getting caught off guard by clean parts interrupted by heavy parts and then syncopation, then cool riff, fill -- it's ear candy all laid out tastefully.
Thanks! I've always been a sucker for contrast in a song, like crushing heavy then delicate cleans, then back to crushing heavy in a short span.

The first time I ever heard this Edge of Sanity song (right when it came out), the part at 1:20 just blew my mind - been influenced by that ever since. :rofl

Whalecum to the first annual inaugural bi-centennial weekly Do Something Challenge!

If you're submitting in THIS thread, that means your submission is due by Friday, 1-13-23 at 11:59PM Eastern.

There are 6 drum WAVs and MIDI's at this link- https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m8n1lfbmhh1aqcj/AAD9gUWi7ygakrBcAsjYygbsa?dl=0

This weeks flavors are the following-

Thrash Metal- 210BPM https://www.dropbox.com/s/et785rq7jowhs0y/Thrash Metal 210.wav?dl=0

FYI- You can change the tempo of a MIDI file in your DAW if these don't sit right with you!

These were from random MIDI's I found in my computer, I didn't add anything to them and you might hear a choked cymbal or something odd in them as I did not listen to them all the way through, I just ran them through appropriate sounding kits in Super Drummer 3 and bounced them down. I will do these for the next round or so while everyone is getting their feet wet, but then I'm going to ween ya'll off the teet.

All submissions equal 1 point. The weekly and bi-weekly challenges will run for 8 weeks, points will be tallied and listed at the end of each week. If you're the winner, you can screenshot it and send it to your wife, husband, best friends, random people on Twitter, wherever you want. Or, if someone has something they would like to submit to a winner; a pack of strings, some picks, a Barbie that's missing an arm and has no clothes, a power supply, a pedal you don't use anymore but it's not worth selling, anything except items that contained bodily fluids, feel free to submit it.

Overall, the point system is to act as a marker for your consistency. The challenge is to push yourself to do a little more than your normal thing, some of you will have to learn how to use a DAW, some of you will have to look at less porn and play more guitar, some are going to have to feel some kind of 'structure' to remain consistent. This is already in the Member Clips subforum, that's why this is a challenge and not just a link to the subforum!

Thank you all who are going to take part in this! I'm looking forward to see the turnout!

I downloaded these but I am not hearing any riffs or guitars. Man, there is not even any bass on these. :idk

:rofl

I got up early on a Sunday of all things, just to try and do something before the intensity of a new week starts.

I think I need a shock collar, though, and not for the sexual kink. I need one for every time I pop over to Reverb
rather than getting something done here.

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :crazy

Okay, here's my submission:

Started writing/recording on Saturday, finished up recording vocals and mixing this morning (Sunday).

Guitar: Ibanez Prestige AZ2402-PWF - 6 tracks, 3 DI tracks using Helix Native and three live recorded tracks using an HX Stomp and when needed - my Creambackatana for feedback in the room.
  1. Rhythm L: Horizon Drive - Placater Dirty - Dual GB25 4x12 cabs using 57/121 mics (50% L)
  2. Rhythm R: Horizon Drive - Badonk - Dual Cali V30 4x12 cabs using 47FET/SM7 mics (50% R)
  3. Lead R: Horizon Drive - Badonk - Dual Cali V30 4x12 cabs using 47FET/SM7 mics (40% R)
  4. Lead L: (Tracked live with HX Stomp) Wah - Dlx. Comp. - Essex A30 - Alex Cab Heavy Cream 3 IR - Transistor Tape and Dynamic Plate used for the spacey outro. (40% L)
  5. Fuzz 1 (Tracked Live with Stomp) Dlux Comp - KWB - A30 - Heavy Cream 3 IR (Center)
  6. Fuzz 2 (Tracked Live with Stomp) Dlux Comp - "Ring Fuzz" (Bighorn Fuzz/Pitch Ring Mod) - US Princess - Heavy Cream 3 IR (Center)
Bass: Ibanez TMB100 - 2 Tracks, both DI with Helix Native.
  1. Bass Dirt: Vital Dist (Parallel) - 60s Bias Trem - Ampeg SVT-4 PRO - Script Mod Phase
  2. Bass Clean - Factory 1 Preset 036 - BAS:Cougar 800 + High shelf boost +6.2db @ 2kHz
Drums are my Pearl Roadshow kit, shitty stock snare head that I need to change, 14" Zildjian A Custom Projection Hats, 17" Zildjian Z Custom Rock Crash, and augmented with XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2. Mics on drums are from a $300 Samson Drum mic kit with a Shure SM57 on snare. Waves CLA-2A on the dual overhead mics, FF Pro-Q 3 and Saturn on the snare. Waves H-Reverb added to the last tom hits at the end.

The Snare is blended about 50% with a sample from AD2 using some room reverb. Kick is blended about 50% with a sample from AD2 as well. Rack and floor tom are 100% replaced -- all using Audio to MIDI plugin.

Three tracks of Vocals - recorded with a handheld SM57, processed with Waves CLA-2A, some Low cut from FF Pro-q 3, and driven with the Warm Tape setting in FF Saturn, with some H-Reverb for the end parts.

Waves MetaFlanger on the mix bus for the intro (along with some bandpass filtering). and some subtle flanging on the outro.

First time actually trying vocals in this style. The lyrics are inspired by my trippy dreams, practicing lucid dreaming, and living with medication.
