NMD: NDSP Quad Cortex

I agree frankly it gets some good sounds and where it is now , with all these great captures, desktop editor, new amps and effects its come a long way . I still don't love the company and their ridiculous antics like a giant soon sign at Name . but I don't have to like them to like their product .
and frankly I agree with you that a LOT ( not every one ) of the models to me sounded and felt better than what I could get out of Helix

When people - myself included - get excited about the potential of stuff like Genome or the possibility of a more fleshed-out hardware Tonex, what we're really saying is we want a Quad Cortex.....

....not made by NDSP. It's a great concept, but just a good product in its current incarnation. I don't believe in the company taking it to a great product, frankly, but I'd love to be wrong. Recent events convey to me no vision whatsoever on that front....

Yeah, I see that point, but I genuinely don’t care.

Other than getting service or repair/replacement if needed, I'm good with the QC as-is, even if it never gets another effect or amp added (which is quite possible, it seems… :rofl).

Well, I just picked one up and,so far loving it. Great UI (amazing), desktop editor works good and I really like the option of models and captures.
I had pretty much every modeler out there at one point, so lets see how it goes with it over time. Pretty sure I will be keeping this one for a long while. VERY impressed so far.

I know we've all read a million things about the QC, however here's my personal thoughts to add on, for what they're worth.

I've been using that gold top Core 594 straight in, with an ISP Stealth Pro power amp and Mesa Rectifier 2x12.

A few thoughts on Day 3:

The Good
- it sounds and feels amazing
- captures sound REALLY GREAT, hugely realistic and with lots of "presence in the room"
- very quickly found two factory captures that could each be my main "forever tone": Marshall Silver Jubilee and Mesa Tremoverb
- I like the limited ability to fine-tune captures, it encourages me to just play and not question/tweak
- effects are limited in amount/selection, but the ones that are my go-to's all sound really good (drives, tape delay, phase, octave down)
- the UI is very effective and really ups the fun factor + speed of use/creativity/play time; I was actually smiling to myself, at points, it was so fun
- touchscreen is responsive and works well; I've been a "down with touchscreens on guitar gear" guy in the past, but this has converted me
- love the size and weight
- long-awaited desktop editor seems good and works well
- finding and downloading a few Electra Dyne captures to try was smooth and easy

The Bad
- power supply is super cheap, as we all know
- haven't been able to get it to connect to my wifi; I'm down in the basement and far from the router on main floor, but my phone, iPad, and MacBook all connect fine down there; also haven't been able to connect it to my phone's hotspot (connecting with cable to MacBook, for now)
- top switches are very close to bottom ones, will have to see how this goes when playing live
- limited ability to customize switches in Stomp/pedalboard mode, can't seem to choose LED colour when assigning multiple effects/amps to one switch?
- Uni-Vibe is meh, way better than Kemper's but not as good as L6 or Fractal
- this is more of a "we'll see" statement, but as @DrewJD82 has pointed out, I keep coming across people having hardware/software issues and looking for help online, so I'm wary of it happening to me; however I did get a Black Friday deal of 1 year free extended warranty, so that helps a bit

The Ugly
- absolutely none!
- this is a really sleek and great looking device, love the look and overall aesthetic
- I am a visual guy and everything about the QC's physical form and on-screen visuals looks fantastic and is a pleasing experience

General Comparisons to "the others"
- it's early in the experience, but I'd say QC captures have an equal "holy sh*t" factor to Fractal's amp models, in terms of realism and wow-reaction; maybe slightly less detail, but still high levels of "this sounds insanely good and extremely close to a real amp" and just a big wow-factor
- QC amp models don't have the same impact; I'd say they're less than Fractal but better than L6 (except maybe the new L6 2203?)
- QC captures have a similar quality to Kemper profiles, in that they sound “more analog” than amp models to me, not sure how else to describe it; just a thicker, more- present sound that fills the room in a different way?
- while sharing this quality ^^^, to my ears, the QC captures seem to have a greater level of detail/are more “high def” than Kemper
- in terms of form factor, so far I much prefer the QC over any of them
But…. Why would one need this if they have an fm9 already? I mean why bother blowing away 1700? When you don’t have to? Same with people who feel they must get a tmp when they have an fm9.. why?

Gear is fun, man. Don't think too hard about it.

Not so subtle reminder to everyone who has ever posted here, will ever post here, has lurked here, is lurking now,
or will lurk in the future. None of which will keep a damn one of us from overthinking the shit out of gear.

It's what we do here. And will continue to do here, in all likelihood. Just a part of the game. And like you remind us, hopefully
not at the expense of the fun it also is, and can be. :beer

I would not want a "Quad Cortex" made by IK Multimedia either. Or Universal Audio for that matter. There's just some companies that have a track record of not dong a good job with their products.

In this age of easy returns and long return periods it's pretty safe to buy-to-try, at most you lose shipping costs. And despite all you read and watch online, nothing beats using the device for yourself.

I have owned the Helix Floor, FM3 and QC at the same time when the QC released. I put them in a Thunderdome deathmatch comparing amp, fx and practicality and then kept the one that emerged victorious. It was the FM3 - mostly because it was a fully featured product with a compact form factor which the Helix was lacking.

I really wanted to love the QC, it was nice and easy to use, captures were cool. But I was not sold on the fx and I did not want to keep it while waiting for NDSP to fix all that was missing. That has turned out to be the right call.

I said back then that I would consider buying it again if it got to where I wanted. 3 years later it's reasonably close, but at the same time we are starting to be in the life cycle of products where new things from other manufacturers are maybe 1-2 years away. Similarly the competition has caught up. Movable mic cab sims are no longer unique, capture functionality can be added cheap now with several products to choose from. So form factor and UI remain the most enticing things about the QC for me.

Well, I didn't have an FM9 at the time. I've had one in the past (along with all the main modelers).

Here's what is putting the QC ahead of the FM9, at the moment, for me:

- capture function for amps and drive pedals (main reason)
- size and weight
- speed/fun factor in use

I will likely have an FM9 again, as I'm curious about trying it with my new-to-me Matrix GT1000FX.

And as others have said, it's fun to try them all out and easy to sell or return, if it doesn't work out.

Nice! Have you captured any of your amps or pedals? Or, what models and/or captures have you tried?

And welcome to TGF! :beer

Thank you.

I only have a handful of presets so far, all models. Have tried a couple captures and they sounds great also.
Really like the Stomp mode screen. Hoping to have more time to play with it this week. Its alot of fun so far.
Reading about some people have noise (grounding issues?). None here. Its super quiet
