What are we watching now?

Are you sure? I am just about convinced John thinks Carpenter is another word for Curmudgeon, and is well on his way to living up to what he supposed his name meant.

Ghosts of Mars was supposed to be Escape from Mars, but it is just as well. Snake should have nothing to do with that pile of horse feces. I love Escape from LA, but most of John's 90s output is dreadful.
I watched LA in the theater and it was so OTT cheesy. The surfing scene was pretty much where I was out :rofl I feel like this had a similar vibe though. I saw Ghosts in the theater as well as was about as equally impressed by Ice Cube as well as the design of the main "villain" and the overall vibe of the rest of his crew.

Also finished American Primeval - it was really good, some great cinematography and cool music from This Will Destroy You.

Finished watching this tonight. Holy shit! Intense is right. History is gruesome.

I was so intrigued by the story that I had to research it, and lo and behold the
events depicted in the series are historically accurate. Those events actually
happened. :(

Oh, isn't it Explosions In The Sky that did the music??

I had watched this some time back. It's kind of a lesson in being aware of how sociopathic people think.

You will love Naomi Watts' and her on-screen girlfriend's acting and hate their characters at the same time.

You won't have a crush on Naomi like the time when you watched Mulholland drive. The slow-burn is too much if you ask me.

Just watched The Insider for the millionth time. This is in my top five films. I think it's Michael Mann's best.

It's crazy this is based on a fucking magazine article about what really happened. What's great is it's really two films in one. In Act I you have the story of Jeffrey Wygand, the big tobacco lamplighter, then you have the iconoclastic journalist Lowell Bergman, and his fight for Wygand and against CBS. To me it has some of the best lines in any film, some of the best acting, some of the best directing...

The fact that it's based on a true story is incredible. I love this film head to toe.

We've been watching Squid Game season 2. I thought the first season was enough to be a standalone one season show that needed no sequels, but I got to admit they've made S2 compelling too.

Been in a bit of a show lull. Finished up The Agency. Great show. New Dexter is rolling along nicely and latest development is exactly what I thought it was going to be.

As far as movies go; watched Land of Bad on NF the other night with Russell Crowe and the uglier Hemsworth bro. It was not deep by any stretch but was really good for a throwaway military flick.

I love that biopics pay so much attention to detail these days, but still they tend to be modern in the ways that bother me, like there's a glossy, processed sheen over every damn thing, in this case like it's a commercial for the 70s.
I haven't seen Bohemian Rhapsody, but as a rule, these biopics all make me feel like I'm watching the trailer for the film instead of the film itself.

I realized halfway through it was a good idea to get the closed captions going because of the inconsistent dialog mixing, and that's something for me to remember when lower budget films are like that.
...and with higher budget films, and with every film in between.

What is Americna Primeval about? Thought about binging it but too lazy to research :ROFLMAO:
I just watched this last week. My first reaction was: every person and every place looks identical to me. But before too long I was hooked. Too short; sorry to see it end. Somewhere between Deadwood and Dances with Wolves (but some days the wolf eats you.)

I'm watching Preacher now. I loved the first couple of episodes, but it's starting to sprawl a little bit now. Not quite sure where it's heading.

Meanwhile, trying to get through the rest of the Dune series with my wife. It's a decent enough show, but I'm having a hard time getting invested in any of these characters.

I loved Deadwood. Am. Primevil is still on my peripheral radar as a down the road and hope it surprises me choice

Preacher was weird. Liked the first episodes but that was back in week by week mode and it was a bit too out there iirc.

Deadwood might just be my favorite of all of these "hour per" series. If you ever have a chance to watch the bonus materials with director commentary/ interviews, it's worth your time.

American Primeval doesn't have the scope or depth of Deadwood, but the characters and locations are very compelling. I think you'll dig it. Plus it's a very limited commitment at 6 hours.

First episode was an absolute blast. But I don't really like the turn the main character has taken, and there are a lot of subplots taking up bandwidth. I hope they reel it in and regain the tone and pacing they struck at the beginning. Anyway, good enough to keep me on the treadmill. :)

How's Samantha Morton? She's one of my favorite actors, just completely awesome and badass and wonderful, but watching the trailer for this the show itself looks like the most self serious pretentious bullshit, like a royal soap opera, and I couldn't care less.

I watched ‘Paradise’ episode 1. Blown away, feeling good and amazed.
Episode 2: same socialistic BS as you see in all other post apocalyptic/fictions when producers try to depict social behavior and forget to checkout the results of worst social experiment of real life, see USSR history. Very disappointing . Rated as 1 on imdb. No go for me for sure.

Loved Deadwood. Ended way too soon. Movie was ok but still wanted more.
Sad to say, I'm pretty sure I watched the movie, but I can't remember a minute of it. Maybe I should revisit that one.

I consider re-watching the series every now and again, but that is a major commitment in time.

She's great, but it comes back around to your point about the entire proceedings being so self-serious. Her character is so disciplined and opaque that she (and everyone else) can seem under-utilized. It's not that there isn't a range of emotion; there is. (For instance, same character at a younger age, and the actor who depicts her.) It's just that the whole thing can be so slow and humorless. I was never a Dune nerd to begin with, so that's no help.

Also: Samantha Morton looks just like Ozzy Osbourne sometimes and once you see it you can't unsee it. Very distracting. :rofl
