Who are the "Nicklebacks" of Metal?

In this sense:
metalcore stuff from the mid/late 2000's morphed into horrible cookie cutter crap IMO. Every single band looked and sounded the same. The songs are all screaming over single note riffs and double bass on the verse and then cuts to half time in the chorus with a poppy sing along vocal and then a "break down". Every band had skinny white dudes with black hair and tattoos everywhere (which eventually morphed into beer bellies, beards, and shaved heads when the hairline faded).

Sleep Token for me is an example of taking some good schtik/creative idea and then going in the wrong direction. I’m also not big on the mask/mystery fad (see also Ghost). Slipknot already did it.

Agreed, they had a really cool thing mashing up djent, dark moody metal, and R&B vocals, but they went full on Imagine Dragons. And totally agreed on the masks/costume thing, that always seems cheesy to me.

My wife somehow became obsessed with Sleep Token and now I have to see them in concert in a couple months.

If anything, I'd guess they'd at least have an entertaining and polished live show with all the theatrics. All that said, anything that keeps kids excited about guitar based music is good in my book!

I’d say Machine Head, especially the period from Ashes of Empires up through Bloodstone and Diamonds. Not to say the earlier stuff is bad (it’s not) but it’s more varied album to album. Later stuff after Catharsis is good too but with the lineup changes it’s not the same. I did not like Catharsis at all and I liked Supercharger.

Okay - a bit of an update. I'm liking all that I'm hearing for sure! Great recommendations.

For my particular situation (my workouts) - I have a particular driving style I'm looking for during my workouts. Not that you can't listen to any of these in that context. Here's what I'm finding:

Immediate top pics so far for my upcoming Gym Sessions:
- Hatebreed
- Lamb of God
- Killswitch Engage

Need to check out more, as I just sampled a few songs, but all sound promising:
- In Flames
- Fear Factory
- Sylosis
- Cattle Decapitation

Great, but probably not for my Gym Playlist right now:
- Meshuggah - I'll probably have to explore more outside of my workouts (just don't know yet)
- Opeth - Sounded great but maybe a little too proggy for my current purpose
- Dance Gavin Dance - really different/interesting, I can see listening outside of the gym

This is fun!! :headbang

Was all ready with my Hatebreed + LOG playlist and I get to the gym and my AirPods were dead. Ugh.

Try again tomorrow.

If ya wanna catch LoG's Top 3, just go right in a row with As The Palaces Burn, Ashes Of The Wake and Sacrament.

They're one of my favorites, but they've been treading the same ground for close to 20 years now.

And for KsE-

Alive Or Just Breathing and End Of Heartache are unbeatable. TEOC was The Black Album of the 00's, right down to the production being ripped off by every metal band in all the subgenres up until the last couple years.

The last two Cattle Decap albums are my favorite, once he started leaning into that 'Bon Scott meets Golem tosses you a melodic chorus in a death metal tune' thing

This. The variety in harsh vocals keeps things fresh and then the music is just relentless.

Also they have a 2h studio documentary up now on YT from the last album, recommended if you’re interested in how they made that record.
