What are we watching now?

We just finished watching all 5 seasons of Pernille. Originally in Norwegian, Netflix has it dubbed in English. The Mrs. first picked up on this and I soon joined in. We both enjoyed it, quite a good series, with nuanced characters and a few interesting threads to follow among episodes.

Coolest thing I’ve seen in a while was Better Man the Robbie Williams story with him being cast as a chimp.
Insanely cool even if one doesn’t dig his music.

It’s on prime

And right now I’m watching Butterfly some Korean spy thing on prime.

Also season 2 of Wednesday on Netflix was entertaining.

Bonus points for using Black Sabbath - The Mob Rules for the closing credits.:rawk
2nd episode closed with Tool.

Watched the new Jeff Buckley documentary in the theater last night. Damn what a lost talent. People rave about his voice of course but his guitar playing was so primal and effortless.

I’ve commenced my annual watch through of the alien franchise, extra topical with Earth out now

This year I’m going chronological order

I feel like a read some where that Earth is not necessarily considering Prometheus/Covenant as cannon? Not sure if that’s true or not and curious how that will play out. I feel like the first episode was a little jarring with the deep space mission, my assumption is that there will be at least 1 or 2 timeline hopping episodes going back to the mission itself as well as the wake from hyper sleep to just before the crash

Considering Covenant ends with quite the cliff hangar I wonder how/if it will reconcile it, and how/if Ridley ever does the third film in that series if it will all line up

Red Skelton's final movie with MGM, before he moved on to a 20 year career in television. It's an unusual story, not quite the goofy comedy that one might expect from Red Skelton, although he does manage to do his drunk routine. The story has a tragic, almost pathetic side. The Skelton character, a diamond cutter, was abandoned by his parents at birth, and had been trying to find them ever since, until a cruel gang of con artists pose as his lost family to steal a famous diamond.

1960 "The Lost World" based on an Arthur Conan Doyle story (it was also made as a silent movie in the 1920s). This 1960 version was produced Irwin Allen and had a number recognizable stars in the cast. Although Willis O'brien, of King Kong fame, was the SPX coordinator on both films they used live lizards instead of his stop motion animations on the 1960s version due to budget constraints. Still, the dinosaur shots are generally well done, at least on par with those of other films of the era (e.g. Journey to the Center of the Earth). And, for us gear fans, there's a character who plays the guitar, actually a cuatro or a similar 4 stringed instrument (although the one used on screen actually has no strings!). The Mrs., though not as much a fan of sci-fi movies as I, loved it. Worth a watch.

But the best part for us was watching this from a VHS recording of a TV broadcast, including news snippets of a baseball strike and several TV commercials. One commercial is for the launch of VH1, and another was for a diet pill featuring a person being sucked into a fridge by a cake! Commercials and the news apparently date the tape to the mid-1980s. And even though the film is available on DVD, it was great fun watching the TV recording, video noise and all. Quite a blast from the past!

Watched a few things over the past few days.

Borderline on Peacock. I think. Jack Nicholson's kid does a great job stalking Samara Weaving's pop star character. Despite thinking I would hate it because barf pop star; it surprisingly good. Might have been because it was a freebie, essentially?

Butterfly on Prime. Little draggy but solid action series.

Went to the new Hell House LLC last night. It has turned into quite a good little series of flicks \m/

Finished S2 of Sandman. It's ok, but a helluva lot of people standing around posturing. I know the comic is kinda like that too.

Waiting for the current season of Foundation to end so I can get an AppleTV subscription again and binge it.

Alien: Earth has been solid so far. Visually it's gorgeous and I think the actors do a great job portraying kids in adult bodies. I feel like it could be more dystopian though because life in Prodigy city does not seem quite as bad as how life for the average person portrayed in other Alien media.

Also, I spotted an IKEA bamboo cabinet in one of the scenes, so I guess IKEA is officially one of the megacorps in Alien lore. I only know this because we had considered buying that same cabinet because it looks nice, but decided against it because it seemed like it would be a nightmare to keep dust-free.

I finally watched the assembly cut version of Alien 3 this morning. It really is almost an entirely different movie with a few fairly significant changes to the plot compared to the theatrical cut. I do think it’s superior to the theatrical cut, and it seems faster pace and less draggy even though it’s 30 min longer
