Who are the "Nicklebacks" of Metal?

Sleep Token for me is an example of taking some good schtik/creative idea and then going in the wrong direction. I’m also not big on the mask/mystery fad (see also Ghost). Slipknot already did it.

I might be a stick in the mud, but I’ve NEVER liked make-up or masks. As a GenXer, I hated KISS before I even heard their music…….then I hated them even more. 😂

I'm indifferent to it. I dig bands who wear them or makeup, but I don't think about it at all when I listen to the music. Mudvayne, Slipknot and Avatar namely. I can certainly see, from a performer's perspective, how it might be easier to do their thing wearing masks or makeup, but there's no fucking way I'd ever have the mind to do it myself. I'm fortunate that black is suitable stage attire for pretty much any setting because I wear the same shit on and off the stage. :rofl

Okay - a bit of an update. I'm liking all that I'm hearing for sure! Great recommendations.

For my particular situation (my workouts) - I have a particular driving style I'm looking for during my workouts. Not that you can't listen to any of these in that context. Here's what I'm finding:

Immediate top pics so far for my upcoming Gym Sessions:
- Hatebreed
- Lamb of God
- Killswitch Engage

Need to check out more, as I just sampled a few songs, but all sound promising:
- In Flames
- Fear Factory
- Sylosis
- Cattle Decapitation

Great, but probably not for my Gym Playlist right now:
- Meshuggah - I'll probably have to explore more outside of my workouts (just don't know yet)
- Opeth - Sounded great but maybe a little too proggy for my current purpose
- Dance Gavin Dance - really different/interesting, I can see listening outside of the gym

This is fun!! :headbang

"Metal" bands I hear metalheads make fun of ala Nickleback:

Five Finger Butt Punch
Sleep Token
Ghost

Anything that gets labeled "Bro Metal".

Recommendations based off your OP list:

Demon Hunter
Gojira
Begravement
Caustic Abyss
I Bleed Lava

My answer would've been Volbeat. The singer sounds like a foghorn. I hate their sound.

I do like Ghost though. I saw them years ago at a festival where Metallica was headlining. I had not heard Ghost before, but they had a good Black Sabbath-ish vibe to them, good riffs and performance. I think the costumes and theatrics are a good fit for what they do.

I'd rather have bands at least dress up a bit for gigs rather than wear cargo shorts and black T-shirts. Makes it overall more interesting to watch. It's a perfect scenario to go a bit crazy with what you wear, and it doesn't have to be masks or full blown costumes.

I don't hate Volbeat per se... but yeah, i don't get the appeal either. They're currently touring Europe and selling out arenas everywhere, it's insane.

I was still planning to catch them in a couple months only because they tour with Bush, which i've grown to quite like lately. But Nonpoint (yay!) is playing with Lacuna Coil (yuck..) on the same night, so that's where my money went.

Thanks! Will check some of them out too.

Thankful for Spotify or Apple Music. Makes it easy to just cue up someone’s “best of” playlist or an album or two.

I don’t have to spend the night on Limewire or Napster finding and downloading shit. Lmao.

Another album that gets me going and puts me in the battle mood is Ensiferum’s Victory Songs. That album makes me want to rain hell down on my enemies lol

I like working out to black metal, and when I used to run (lol) it would be shit like The Haunted that kept me going.
The Haunted is criminally underrated :satan

I don't like Volbeat, but they are bro-rock gone "metal" done 1000% right in my book. Like they are putting some spirit it in it; even if you don't like the yodeling.

Another underrated band, IMO that maybe doesn’t fit what you’re looking for, but I love Chevelle.

Was just posting how much i'm liking their latest album, it's really good. Criminally underrated band, with a discography filled with bangers.

JFC, i can almost picture Tool playing this.

@Fireproof Search for "Panzer Division Marduk", start running. Enjoy!
