What are we watching now?

I am a reader and prefer authenticity. No beef here. :beer

Ok, a little beef. Apparently when they are speaking in Portugese
on Shogun it sounds EXACTLY like English.

Started Shogun last night. I am hooked. :chef

I could see the non-readers among us hating it, though. May subtitles be the death of you! :rofl
I need to get started on that.

As a non-native English speaker, it bugs the hell out of me how so many movies and TV shows might have a little bit spoken in some other language and then flips to English for the rest of it.

I've been watching stuff with subtitles all my life so to me hating subtitles is...pardon the pun...very foreign. I'll usually even put on the English closed captions because there's sometimes hilarious interpretations of the sound in a scene.

I am a sucker for well-done historical pieces like Shogun. I am sure there are many liberties, taken,
but the general nature of the narrative is pretty spot on and accurate from what I understand.

It's an immersive adventure that I really enjoy and find illuminating and inspiring.

Oh, and we are blessed to exist now. Holy fuck!! :beer

Is it cake?
Some of those have altered my reality perception

If I wanted to read a movie or show, I'd look up the scripts. I give few exceptions, mainly for stuff like the original Godzilla. I watch Italian films, and regardless of what language the film is technically in, every film is overdubbed.

Went to see Godzilla vs Kong 2 in an IMAX theater last night. That movie was just straight up fun, like there is zero subtlety to it at all.
Godzilla vs Kong 1 is pretty required viewing but that's also a fun movie. You can read the Wiki synopsis for Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of Monsters to catch up with those, the films aren't that great.

I hear Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One are actually legitimately good films, but those are not in theaters here and not available on any streaming service atm. But in absence of those, grab the popcorn, turn your brain off and enjoy the Godzilla vs Kong films!

I also went to see Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire because I had some expiring "watch any movie" tickets. It's ok, I think I liked Afterlife a bit better as FE had too many characters and I felt the girl of the family being the main character was already done in Afterlife.

Watched night 1 of Wrestlemania 40. The matches I wanted to see, anyways. I'm sure Cody Rhodes will lose again (lol, fuck Roman Reigns and the Rock), so I'll check out maybe 2 matches tomorrow after work.

I love Ed Harris in general, and Jacknife in particular. I’ve been meaning to rewatch it. Parts of the movie were actually filmed in my home town.
We tried this one today. Was not feeling it at all. When DeNiro is playing an annoying character; he really plays annoying  Maybe I need to revist. We got to the fishing trip and that was enough :ROFLMAO:

I suspect it hasn’t aged well. Super earnest and lots of familiar (obvious? overplayed?) tropes. But at the time, these characters, etc. were very familiar and sympathetic to me.

It’s kind of a spiritual successor to Deer Hunter, though of course not as good.

(I haven’t actually seen it in maybe 30 years.)

Great cast obviously. I don't think I was in the mood for it at the time. Ed Harris is always good.

Rewatching Lost for probably the 12th time, and just realized that Jack’s best man at his wedding is none other than Zack Ward, AKA, Scut Farkus from A Christmas Story:

For what it's worth, I tried re-watching (the actual) The Deer Hunter (on paper, my favorite film) a few months back, and I couldn't get through it. Again, it just hasn't aged particularly well. Characters that were so endearing years/decades ago feel like stereotypes now; the performances just a little bit stilted, etc. I think a kind of fatigue sets in where these really iconic films fall victim to all of the subsequent works they inspire.

*Also, it's no help if your wife is sitting next to you, visibly bored out of her mind with a film you never stop talking up LOL.

Watched Dune: Part Two last night.

I thought the first installment was a little “meh,” but I really enjoyed the second.
