I know the article is a joke -- but I tell you what (and I'm no freak about this kind of stuff), some pickguards do affect the tone of a stratocaster. Depends on type of material and thickness. I only know this because I've changed pickguards religiously over the years. Differences are subtle but it's more evident when you strum it acoustically.
