It refreshed electric guitar in the early 2000's which was in a limbo.
This is my take as well. Was it better than 80s metal, well no( not for me at least). Was it (way) better than the F-tier post-grunge or six-pence-non-the-richer-whatever bands at the time? Hell yeah!
 
I was a teenager in the 80s, and lived on a steady diet of Priest, Maiden, Scorpions, Queensryche, Dokken, and a few others. Grunge and Nu Metal just didn't move the needle for me at all when they hit. I can listen to some of the grunge bands now, but only for a short time before I move on. Never did warm up to Nu Metal at all.

Hybrid theory came out when I was 8 and it changed my life. I was already a wanna be skateboarder child and listening to a lot of pop punk and alt rock (my older sisters music taste assisted with this) but it would be another 4 years before discovering metalcore and melodic death metal and having my life changed even further
