Fractal Talk

Tried to use the Tonematch function to get the Axe 3 a little closer to the Friedman IR-X. It came up with a curve that rolled off the highs and lows a little except for a bump in the very low end. But even with that the Fractal was still a lot brighter than the Friedman. Will need to play around with that more.

What I'm finding with the Fractal is that I'm preferring very significant cuts especially in the highs. Like 6db/octave all the way down to 5k. I need to find out why it's so different than anything else in terms of being brighter.

A great example of a '83 JCM800 2204 50W vs a '78 JMP 2203 100W.
* I love his channel.

He’s a killer player, and always picks great riffs to play. makes all his demos very enjoyable to listen to when the playing is so good.

Very good example of how the 2203 sounds a bit cleaner/controlled and punchier and the 2204 is more aggressive. Basically exactly how you’d expect different NFB values to affect the amps

I hear the JCM800 2204 as more scooped and grindy and the JMP 2203 is less congested and more roar.
Yeah I definitely think of the 2204 as more scooped and squishy.

As much as I’m keen for a Fractal 2203, I’d love to know how close adjusting settings of the 2204 can get to it. Because for me, a real strength of Fracral units is being able to adjust internal settings and build/modify existing amps.

In a lot of ways being able to modify exact plexi values within one model makes more sense to me than having 5 models that are essentially the same circuit with different values. I’d love to have the base circuit, and then be able to hear what different cathode bypass cap and resistor values sound, what 0.022 vs 0.0022 coupling caps sound like, different plate resistor values, split vs shared cathode, different presence values etc. I think it’s often possible to approximate the effect of these but the ULTIMATE modeller for me would allow for specific tweaking of these things.

I think they keep these parameters hidden/locked on purpose, making things unstable or even mathematically unsolvable is really easy.

That is true modeling for sure. Maybe there is something out there I'm not aware of, or underway, where you can build a virtual circuit from input to output (or mod an existing one) with voltage and values, etc. and then actually hear the outcome with a guitar. I would love a modeler like that where I could virtual breadboard.

Maybe if certain values were tied together or preset in some way? I’d much rather have a dangerous digital amp than a dangerous one with 500V running through it, that’s kind of the appeal (as well as being able to tweak and instantly hear the difference)

They shot down the idea, since it was a closeout item.

What you want is the Cliff Chase signature edition Axe FX. It’s an extremely limited edition though, and nearly impossible to find.

The JMP I linked, not a single mod, all original, super rare to see one unmodified.
But seriously when you think of companies who does this ?
Asked you which one he should buy to satisfy the demand , that crazy
Also Laxu complained about a font in the tuner display , guess what got changed in the last beta the font
The level of communication and desire to interact with customers is unprecedented IMO

One of the biggest advantages to keeping a company modestly sized is that you can maintain a pretty solid relationship with your customers. Once things get to a certain size the bean counters take over, and then things go south.

That is very true , it so nice to see the transparent conversation I learned something new the other day when people were asking for the Badlander , I had no idea that tracing a modern PCB amp took that much time if you do not have the schematic and then I thought yep make senses all the relays especially or multi channel multi preamp amps if even techs fear opening up and working on the Boogies , I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like to try and trace amps with multi PCB boards crammed tight with things like IR loader , rev etc

Laxu's actually made a few contributions to the Fractal UI over the years. It's why we don't penalize him per UI post. :rofl
