Fractal Talk

Been watching a bunch of Sting live concerts from the early 90s lately and really digging Dominic's tones, so decided to revisit my Mesa sounds. He used a Mark III back in the day, but I managed to approximate his clean sound using the Triaxis Green clean mode and paired it with Triaxis Yellow for lead stuff. :chef

I built the whole preset using the Cali 4x12 cab from the Factory bank of IRs, which according to the wiki is actually Cliff's personal cab from back in the day? Sounds great - perfect pairing with the Triaxis. Just used the first IR marked 57 A, I believe.

Everything's in the Wiki. As soon as something is added/changed, and written up in the RN's, Yek adds it. And any comment Cliff makes, Yek adds that too, with a link to the post where he commented.

It needs to be released as a hardcover coffee table book. :ROFLMAO:

The block guide is great too.

To be absolutely honest, the wiki is a goldmine of information but it's a total mess, if you're lucky you get to find the same page again.
When you get your Fractal, you have the chance to reformat it since it's a Wiki!

I've kinda wanted to do that too but just haven't had the will.

To me the big problem is that it sometimes mixes content from older Axe-Fx units with newer ones and since there's a good amount of overlap, you can expect pages from the FMx section to link to pages from the Axe-Fx 3 section and vice versa.

The MIDI Sysex pages are some of the most problematic because 90% of it applies to Axe-Fx 2 and does not work on current gen.

Someone once tried to repackage the wiki as a personal exercise (no profit, etc; this was done by the person to work on a particular skill, though I can’t remember which), and they got mauled by several of the always-online posters on the FAS forum. Lots of accusations of ripping off yek and such.

I know a Quad Cortex user recently did this as well, without crediting Yek until several people called him out. He was literally copy and pasting from Yek's guides, including the quotes from Cliff about specific amps he was modeling. Even after he was called out he took this "What's the big deal? I'm not selling it" stance. Lame.

I got the JPIIC Shred Boost added to the Input Boost types! Although the way Cliff answered me, it sounded like he was already working on it, and my timing just happened to coincide. :grin

The instance I’m thinking of was quite clear about the sources and authors of the content they were repackaging. I agree the QC incident was much shadier.

I was actually the one who called him out on it (since I was still on one of the FB Quad Cortex groups so saw his post at random) and pointed Yek to the thread. Others were praising the guy for his work (without being aware of the ripped off content) which was just not right since all he did was compile it.

I tried to explain to the guy why what he was doing was wrong, but he seemed more pissed off about being caught. It's one thing to refer to content, write your own interpretation of it and provide sources, and a totally other thing just blatantly copy/pasting it and claiming it as your own work.

That's Our Quad Cortex

For once it was something we can't blame on NeuralDSP!

Having a guide like that for QC owners would be great. Dude just went the wrong way about making it. Had he asked for permission from Yek and given the credit where due, I don't think anyone would have had an issue with it. Even if you are not familiar with academic writing, you could just go "I'm really sorry about this, can I get permission to use the content?" but the dude just doubled down instead.

Taking responsibility, admitting when you are wrong, then taking steps to correct the issue is surprisingly hard for some people.

I think this was the time I made a joke about downloading the entirety of AxeChange and then reuploading it as your own. Good times.

Eh, I actually think it’s OK. Kind of crappy, but it’s a guy compiling someone else’s compilation. Queue the “can you take IRs of IRs” discussion.

The really crappy thing about it was how badly it was copied over. He had copied over Fractal specific references verbatim, it was a bad compilation.

And no, I was actually the one who called him out on it first :hmm :cop

Maybe I’m crazy. I didn’t particularly see anything egregious about what that individual did. They were clear on the source of the content, there was nothing to gain from the exercise (aside from experience), and all in all, it had the potential to be another useful resource for FAS users.

I’m getting the feeling I’m a bit alone in my “it ain’t that big a deal” perspective….

That said, I’m open to the other perspectives.
