Fractal Audio Firmware Update Thread

I agree Leon but what i mean is that not all patches are created equally some that i download are very close some are close and some are not even close :idk
Well I'm sure some have post processing. And like you mentioned if you are listening on your phone and then play it on monitors it will be different. I can't say I have this problem

No i never listen to anything on my phone its always on PC which has a high end Audio card and i have a very good 2.1 Audio system
and my guitar playback system is a Helix through a pair of "FRFR"
:idk

Let me ask you guys something, when you hear these presets on YouTube and then you download them and try them do you all find the sound the same? very close? or not really what you heard?

There's always too many variables of it to behave the same.
  • Playing style vs the person who made the preset.
  • The guitar(s) used.
  • Output system.
  • Output volume.
  • The room you play in.
I see other people's presets as ideas and starting points you need to tweak to work with your gear and playing style.

Yes same here i use them as a base when I do, but of late I've been making my own

He does explain it in his video just not his playback system
Hey look who’s back!

Lol.

Well, when I built the patch I was using my Les Paul loaded with Balaguer Evergreen humbuckers which are a PAF style pickup. Monitors were Yamaha HS8’s.

Literally dozens of people have contacted me having found the free (not paid) preset spot on with minimal tweaking on their end.

Keep in mind, in the mix clip, it’s Quad tracked with 2 different guitars.

Hello, yes I watched the whole video it was really great how you explained how you went about recreating this tone, and I figured you used the Yamaha's as its what i saw in the background
and yes I did tweak it to get closer
quad tracking must be where the difference is
that was some awesome playing, Loved it

Cheers
Mike

Awesome! The full mix is also… mixed! Lol. So there is post processing on it, but not on the preset build portion.

I need to go back and revisit it through my power amp and cab set up sometime.

I updated your patch with the new cabs tweaked the mics slightly, modded the EQ's slightly
there is one difference which i suspect makes a difference as well my LTD EC-1000 Has EMG actives, so that maybe a factor as well and OFC i cant play as well as you can :D
I recently sold my Revstar which did have AlNico II PAF in them which would have been a better choice but ATM my LTD was all I have
Waiting on my new Revstar and will Re install those PuP's and Revisit

Man I love the Revstars. Such killer guitars.

I think the coolest thing about the current state of modeling is how reactive they can all be to individual player’s touch sensitivity, which really presents itself when using other people’s presets. There are only a couple guys whose presets I can use and I have to assume we have a similar pick attack, ie- I downloaded Leon’s Days of Gifts or whatever it’s called presets, I could have recorded with those without touching a thing. Or Austin Buddy’s presets I use, I’ll tweak the B/M/T to suit the guitar I’m using but that’s really it. Rarely am I touching drive and I never venture into the deeper parameters.

But I’ll have my buddy over my place, he’s a chronic bitchpicker and he’s been asking me this for 20 years without really making the dots connect, “Why does it sound like you have so much more distortion playing than when I do?” Because he hits the strings like he’s scared of them. The way I set my distortion, you really need the right hand to make it work for you.

And others, like some Floyd presets I downloaded from a guy from YouTube who does an amazing job at nailing Gilmour tones, we’re using the same guitars/pickups and I have to drop the distortion WAY down on them all. Eventually I just used all the effects he programmed and got my own amp/pedal tones because there was that much of a difference. His YouTube demos of them sound great, but the way we attack the strings is so different it didn’t translate from him to me.

Yeah quad tracked with P90's vs an EMG loaded guitar will make a big difference in tone.

I was futzing around with the GT100 ( :bag ) and was getting some excellent effects for a Floyd rig. Clean tones are studio processed af but with a strat; they sounded excellent. It's the dirt side (for rhythm purposes per usual) where Boss struggles.

From what I gather a lot Of Fractal preset content creators such as Leon, Austin and a few others as well don't need much if any Mods
:idk
Which is awesome But im moving towards making my own for what I require I do use some presets for some ideas though, and yes its a lot of work but i enjoy it and it does not interfere with my practice routine, just means more time spent in the woodshed ;)

ALL presets are going to need tweaked when a different person uses them. I grab them for the free IRs, switching configs and any sort of effects dialing I can crib for my own purposes.

I think the presets that require less modding just comes down to experience and knowing how to dial in a usable tone that’ll translate to other guitars well. IE-don’t crank the f*ckin distortion on 10 on everything.

I’m really picky about high gain tones, so any metal stuff I track I definitely use my own presets, but with edge of breakup/clean tones, I‘m not picky and enjoy pretty much all of them, so I’m a bit looser with what I’ll use, which is where Austin’s presets come into play for me. When I’m writing I’ll rely on them to get the ideas down, then tweak them to taste when I go to record the final takes. It’s more about speed and getting the ideas tracked enough that the recording retains the original inspiration so when I pick it up a week later, I don’t think to myself “What the f*ck was I thinking? This sucks!” :rofl

They are always rig and context dependent---which is why I love seeing these offered as "gifts," but
pretty much never use them myself.

I won't mention any names, because they are all very generous and super cool cats, but some I find
really thin and bright (again, probably due to a different rig/setup I am using) and some to be super
bass heavy and too thick for me. Some have way too much gain and I find those tones unusable.

I roll my own. But again, think it is super cool that they are given away for free as a gift from Fractal
and their artists.
