Anybody else getting sick of modellers?

No shill youtuber gets to tell me what's back, amps were always here and remain the most fun and authentic way to play electric guitar through.

So I’m currently finishing up at a wedding in London tonight. It’s a really terrible drive here, incredibly bad load in and no room on stage.

So to make my life easier it’s back to modelling tonight. One case and a couple of guitars, 5 minute setup and straight into the PA, couldn’t be easier to be honest.

And you know what? It still sounds like an absolute bag of balls. Fuck these damn things. At least I’m getting paid to sound like shite.

I smell a bit of operating error...

Direct just ain’t it for some of us. I was forced to use my captor and an IR loader for only my in ear feed at gig the other night and absolutely hated it. Similar to what I experienced when trying to go cabless in the practice space in the past. I have my doubts that a modeller would somehow be better than a real amp in that regard but suppose could test that with my stomp

But it would beg the question…

I chalk up most this stuff to taste in preference, but “the same” it will never be :idk

That's all fine.
But then, seriously, in case thousands and thousands of guitar players are getting along with modeling by now just fine (some even loving it more than their real amps), some high profiled folks among them, "sounds like an absolute bag of balls" is either plain hyperbole or operator error.

Fair but I’ve spoken to plenty of people that say mesas (or insert other amp here) sound like shit to them, im a huge Mesa fan boy so that doesn’t register for me but I do get it :idk

No accounting for taste one way or another when it comes to subjective stuff like tone

Another good example - I’ve never been able to get along with OG 5150s that I’ve owned. Really just found them grating and abrasive but on the flip side they sound amazing to me in countless hands of others live and recorded

Nope, I know how to dial in a tone and it sounded fine through studio monitors at home.

But… no real cab or stage volume means the whole thing lacks depth, generally sounds weak and there’s no interaction between the guitar and cab = bag of balls.

I agree they’re amazing for recording and will probably work in stadiums where the guitar rig is in a different postcode to the performer anyway, but in any other live scenario it’s :poop:

there’s no interaction between the guitar and cab

Which interaction precisely are we talking about here? The only possible interaction would be feedback (unless we're talking about smashing 4x12 stacks with your guitar neck). And I'm getting great feedback using an "FRFR" wedge.

That's quite nonsensical as these things are used sucessfully in galores of silent stage environments. And they sound partially fantastic.

Yes, you need to get used to things. And you might not be able to. Fine. But that's about all there is.

Yes, interaction with the guitar cab and the air and vibrations you get, including the natural feedback which doesn’t sound the same when using an "FRFR".

And I’ve definitely got used to it, I’ve done 100’s of gigs with different variations of direct, direct with "FRFR", direct with cab etc and for me it’s real amp > modeller + cab > Modeller + "FRFR" > Modeller direct.

YMMV but most bands going direct sound worse than those using amps, and I’m including my own in that.

There really is a trend here of people arguing against other people's opinions.

In case you're talking about me, I just can't stand all that kinda absolutistic statements. "Sounds like ass" (implying there's no way around it) is one of those statements.

I could as well tell you how, say, traditional guitar speakers are the last overpriced pieces of junk slapped together and then marketed as some kinda mojo thing for maximum profit (which in fact is precisely what they are). I can only imagine the shitstorm.

No one really cares dude. It is an opinion. Let him have it. He's clearly TRIED going digital, and he doesn't like it. He thinks it sounds like ass. It doesn't need to be the huge back and forth where you try and disprove his opinion. He doesn't rate digital, I don't like the Kemper, and no-one is changing our minds. It aint that deep.

Apparently I might just need to get used to the ""FRFR"" sound.

Maybe when I’ve got a few more gigs under my belt.

Haha! I know right. We're just n00bs who need to give peace a chance!

"FRFR" feedback. Just recorded. In a friggin' living room. Where's the angry wasps and what exactly sounds like an iPhone speaker?
