What are we watching now?

We watched Marvin's Room from 1996. That was surprisingly great and funny and wonderful. You have Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert de Niro, and Diane Keaton, plus perfect directing by Jerry Zaks. I couldn't believe how much I loved it. The acting was 100% at the highest level; just what I always hope I can see in a film.

On the other hand, it was all about feelings, and right after I only felt like watching either Rambo II or Predator. Anything more touchy feely than that was too much.

Been on a slow Hackman run as of late. Watched Get Shorty the other night (FANTASTIC 90's crime comedy). Great flick, even if it screams 90s at the top of it's lungs. Watched Crimson Tide last night for (I think?) the first time? Killer cast and overall great flick as well. Hackman was excellent in both. Not sure what's next as I have seen most everything of his worth seeing.

Yeah, recently watched The Package and The Conversation.

Crimson Tide, The Package, and The Conversation are all great. To see a different side of what he was capable of, I highly recommend Power from 1986.

Lost was fine (damn good!) at first when it still felt like they knew where they were going. What I don't want in any show is a long drawn out thing that gets boiled down to dream sequence or whatever "easy" explanation after 197 episodes. I need to remember where I left off and start it back up in the next few days before the trial runs out.
Yeah, that's what ruined Lost for me in the end. It was enjoyable junk food for most of its running time. But after a while you realized it had meandered a lot - too far - and was going to have no choice but to cop out with an "everything is imagined" device of some kind.

I haven't finished watching Severance yet, but I think it's significantly smarter than that. There's a lot going on in the way of social commentary and metaphor. Whether that's your bag is another question entirely. It's sometimes painfully slow and dry, but in a plainly intentional way that's both uncomfortable and comedic. Kafkaesque, maybe? Rewarding stuff if you can get through it.

That was the EXACT reason I had trouble even starting the show. I assumed it was a comedy. But yes, it’s on a similar level as Lost, but the writing, acting, directing… everything is so much better.
He was also in a TV series called Party Down - another comedy. But I think his comedy chops translate well in Severance. He has resting "WTF is happening" face that always seems appropriate here, all things considered.

Yeah watching Severance with my wife the other night and I turned to her and said - I so hope they stick the landing with this show. It’s so good but I have GOT PTSD. She won’t even watch HOTD with me.

I actually enjoyed the first handful of episodes best, when it was still seen entirely from the innie's perspectives. When the story inevitably started to open up and "explain itself" - and even more so when the season ended and I realized IRL writers were probably making up their minds about the direction - I started to worry. I feel like this could have been a very effective ~6 episode mini-series, but apparently they're going the distance. Let's hope it doesn't turn into the Matrix Trilogy or something. :D

(P.S. I actually liked the first Season of HOTD, but the second... I don't even really remember watching it? GOT ending was weak, but not to the extent that I regret watching the show or anything.)

GOT started a trend of broadcast reviews after the show or while watching it, e.g. Thronecast on the BBC. Once it turned sour/utterly stupid/ran out of GRRM material, and especially the final season, it spawned a raft of "hate watch" channels on YouTube I still watch regularly.

Had to have a laugh at it somehow! Hail the 199!
