What are we watching now?

I'm serious. There's loads of buzz about it today.

I'm going to have to see it anyway as punishment for bringing her to see Gladiator 2. Might as well try hype myself.
Saw wicked yesterday. Had no choice in the matter. It started out even weaker than expected; later redeemed itself with one or two effective scenes, interspersed with still more mediocre schlock. (Perhaps an ad-libbing Jeff Goldbum is actually slightly overrated, and he ought to be given actual, well-written lines, if cast at all?)

Overall, meh out of 10.

(P.S. Since this is a musical, and many of you are musicians, I should say that much of the singing is technically astonishing. But then, most of the songs seem kind of half-baked to me, without as much interesting structure, hooks, counterpoint, etc. as you’ll typically find in a big budget musical. Or maybe I was just in a bad mood, or annoyed by all the “vocabulation”.)

We've been watching the Craig Bonds. They're like inverse Star Trek movies. Every odd numbered one is good.

I feel these movies would move along faster if Bond didn't keep killing his leads.

My try favorite Bond films are The World Is Not Enough and Skyfall, two very very different films. I don't like Brosnan playing Bond as a eurotrash model who primarily traffics in cutting insults, but I love the story of that film, and Sophie Marceau is... everything. To me a great film can often come down to how well the villain is drawn.

Skyfall is different to me, because it's just so high quality. No terrible jokes or terrible acting like The World Is Not Enough has, just great filmmaking in every possible way, even the over the top action. But the two are similar with the great performances of the villains. Javier Bardem to me carries the torche of the best traditions in acting, the most compelling and magnetic Method acting styles, where Yes, it's all there under the surface, but it's carried by someone who feels like a ticking timebomb of emotion. For anyone who even remotely likes that guy, I highly suggest Biutiful from 2010.

Craig and Dalton are my least favorite Bond actors. The former has films that seem to do stuff, but feel like slow burns, while the latter doesn't seem like a Bond at all, and doesn't look like Bond until halfway through the second film. I could do without either. Connery, Lazenby, Moore, and Brosnan for me.

Watched Gladiator II last night. Up till midnight because of this fact. Boo.

You aren't going to match anything about it. Ever. You can't create charisma or emotion with CGI.

Denzel was good enough because it's Denzel. He's no Oliver Reed though.

Paul Mescal was fine and showed a bit of charm. Nowhere near Crowe though.

The Joacuquin replacement twins were absolutely assinine and just beyond terrible.

Pedro Pascal and his Marvin the Martian voice made me want to punch him in the face. Please go back to when the Madalorian was good.

CGI crap was obvious and especially the sharknado section :wat :wat :wat Bonus hate for Ozempic Pompidou actor who I absolutely loathe in a bit part.

As far as ties to the original and extra bits or narrative to make this work; ehh. Overall a 4/10. It has been a bit since I went to the theater but I continue to see why I prefer movies on the couch 1bazillion percent over the "theater experience".

The original is a masterpiece and my favorite. Thanks for the heads up; sounds like they just wanted to cash in on the original movie title name.

Last night we saw 48 Hrs from 1982. I love The Warriors, also by Walter Hill. To me this movie is great in every way. The acting is actually really cool throughout. I find myself liking Nick Nolte more every time I see him. The directing is really great, bringing exactly what every actor needs to do perfectly for every scene. And so many dudes from The Warriors are in this movie.

And to me this has some of the best music and cinematography I've ever seen coming together. James Horner's score is weird as hell, and completely awesome. It's the only time I've heard intense kettle drums! It's like this very cool Caribbean fusion or something.

And the cinematography is just ideal, to me. It has that 70s warmth of the film grain, even though it was released in 82, and the nighttime shots are some of the most epically beautiful I've seen. It reminded me of the John Alton noir films, but in color.

And I had the feeling it inspired Lethal Weapon as well as LA Takedown and Heat by Mann. I never give much thought to Walter Hill, but this made me respect the hell out of him. There are these extended shots inside the police precinct where this huge number of actors are energetically delivering lines in counterpoint with each other, and it's amazing, because it's just so well done and just feels, well, badass as hell.

Loved every damn second of it.

Why would you ever try to make a Gladiator 2

The great thing is, it's just a great song even outside the context of a movie. I still go with A View To A Kill, great theme to a shitty movie!
It's weird how the Bond franchise is the only film series where you are like "I wonder what the theme song will be like?" Too bad that after Casino Royale the Bond films have been just so damn boring. I'll take the Roger Moore slapstick, or Pierce Brosnan over the top crazy over whatever they're doing these days.

A View To a Kill is one of my favorite Bond themes too.

Streamed the first three episodes of Landman last night. Pretty good show....love Billy Bob Thornton's character in this.

Last night we watched Daddio, from 2023 on Netflix. I love Sean Penn always, and this was just another incredible performance from this guy. I don't care about Dakota Johnson, and her modern characterless hipster bullshit feel sucked at the beginning, but then she started acting later in the film.

I love films that are based on psychoanalysis (Good Will Hunting, Equus), add this surprised me at how it morphed into that, in such a great way.

"Is this what you want Lester?"

Re-watching Fargo atm.

Yeah I liked that too. Had no idea where it was going though. Which is good.
