What are we watching now?

We watched The Last Detail from 1973, and we both thought it was great. You have to watch it with closed captioning, because the dialogue is mixed so low you'll miss half of it. Otherwise, it's a very cool film with a lot of personality and feel, and the acting is great all the way around. This is my favorite of Jack Nicholson's performances that I've seen. Here he was actually acting, rather than just being himself; it was great to see. I love seeing actors work hard. As a bonus Michael Moriarty, one of the most underrated and underutilized actors ever, shows up for five minutes toward the end. Man, I always love that guy in his younger roles.

The big surprise is that you see a very young Randy Quaid as one of the main characters, and it's a serious role. We inadvertently saw a couple of his films in a string, because he was also in The Last Picture show, even younger. He was great in The Last Detail; I can't believe it. Reading about his personal life, I'm blown away that he was once a struggling actor, working to churn out quality work. Man, you never know where someone's career or life will go.

Minuscule.

Yes… love watching stuff with the kids.

Gona se part two tomorrow. Bag of chips keeps the mancold away

Last night we saw Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, from 2007, for the second time. This is by my favorite director, and I had seen it a while ago. My God, it's so dark, it's like a real horror movie. The characters are so bleak and doomed, it's like Requiem For A Dream. There acting was great, because these are all capable actors directed by the very best, in my opinion, but the story is so cruel and without hope it just was a soul destroying experience. Everything about it was well done except the cinematography, which had no artistry to it whatsoever.

Giving House of Cards another go. Man this show is intricate! My kind of stuff. The complexity is amazing.

Btw, I just LOVE how background music plays its part in moving you along with the plot. Assuming it's done well. I wonder what those writers' rigs look like. Or are they all keyboards?

I loved House of Cards until the final season. I felt like that was just too disconnected from the things that made it compelling. But otherwise, it made me respect the hell out of Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as actors. With Wright, I love to compare her role in House of Cards to She's So Lovely; that shows an incredible range and quality of character building I wish I could've seen in more of her roles. Kevin Spacey to me is very much an SGIEM (same guy in every movie), but here I felt it just worked really well. He was able to oscillate between charisma and Machiavellianism so deftly.

The Real Ghostbusters. I wish the full series (plus the Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters episodes) were available, whereas the DVD collection I found just has "most" of the episodes (minus like 20+ of them if memory serves).

I also watched the 4 Critters movies this weekend, and have been watching the Beetlejuice cartoon series.

Slow Horses

Anyone?
So I wanted to like this one. And I am not sure if I don't like it. I tried a few episodes but I LOATHE Apple TV for reasons I can't quite describe. Seems like it feels like almost nothing is actually included and you have to pay for 80% of the crap they are advertising vs. Prime where it at least feels like an even split? Show itself is slow but has that UK cop drama vibe that I generally love. I will probably revisit some time because Gary Oldman.

I LOATHE Apple TV because Invasion, and that is reason enough alone.
