This looks pretty cool: Simplifier X

If DI guitar is good enough for The Beatles then it's good enough for me!

Oh. Wait. They had talent.

Well anyway...

I know @JiveTurkey is gonna lose all respect for me, but I went ahead and ordered one for "funs". Waiting for my container ship of belongings and gear (AF3!) to arrive from Canada has created terrible GAS and I finally broke down.
In all honesty, I do look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

I've always disliked analogue cabs sims - they've always sound flat and insipid to me, but the latest stuff from the DSM guys sounded promising in demos. I'd like to hear it for myself.

I was actually only wanting the more attractively priced Simplifier MKII, but it's sold out in the UK right now and so I ended up saying F*** it, and went for the Simplifier X because it was immediately available and the left hand side is the MKII voices anyway. Some people have been saying that they don't like the higher gain side so much, but I may as well find out.

It was either that or the IR-D and we've had the IR-X before and it's still got a modelled power section and IRs (which the Axe-Fx can do just as well and in fact better). But in the end, I just fancied trying something different. Can always send the X back if it's a disappointment.

Plus, the X can be used with stereo ins and outs.

A stereo Brig may also have fallen into my shopping cart on its way to checkout.

Lack of sag compression was the real bummer for me. Maybe that power drive thing will help.

Well the X wasn't for me.

Surprise!

(Nobody is surprised)

I didn't really want the higher gain side of the device as I already mentioned, but did want the MKII left hand side of the device - that's why I bought it.

So it's very fiddly and sensitive which made it hard to dial in IMO. The crucial part is the maintaining balance between the preamp and power amp sections. Not easy. But I stuck with it. I was so sure that with enough effort I could get what I wanted.

I got close for EOB tones and into crunch, but it still wasn't blowing me away or anything. Higher gain tones were a no from me dawg.

Also the levels of bass seemed really hard to control - often too much, and yet bass was required in order to produce fuller tones; it was something of a paradox in that regard.

I felt that for all the possible combinations, there was really only one spot that I thought was "sweet", so it seemed pointless to have so much configurability if that was the only spot I was going to find a tone that I liked.

After a while I had an honest reality check with myself and admitted that it just wasn't doing it for me and put it back in its box, never to be opened again.

Common response to these boxes I see.
