TGF Do Something Weekly Challenge Week 1 Thread

Alright here we go, first full song I've written in probably fifteen years!

Pretty happy with how it turned out. I learned a LOT in the process, and hopefully I can make some more songs. Although I have no idea how to make a bass guitar sound good yet.

I started with the rock track I think, slowed it way down, and then ended up slicing it up a bit. For the ending I figured out how to use EZ Drummer a bit so I could drag in a couple other grooves and spliced some other bits together.

To write the song, I did a bunch of scratch tracks over the original groove, then picked out the stuff I liked and dubbed it again. I tried doing all dry guitars and using plugins but ended up re-doing all the guitars and bass tonight printed fully wet.

Thanks Drew for the challenge and inspiration!

Gear:

Garageband for the DAW
Fractal Axe FX 3 for all bass and guitars
Brit 800 model for all guitars with different effects and settings for different parts
PRS CE-24 (stock 85/15 pickups) for rhythm guitar and the end lead
Ibanez AZ 2204 (Dimarzio Injector / Area 67 / 36th PAF bridge) for rhythm guitar and various clean melodies
Fender Telecaster (K-Line Signature pickups) for the chorus melody
Squier Jaguar Vintage Modified bass

Dooooooooooooooooooooooooooood! Like WTF?

I'd be proud of that, too. Super excellent. Great tones. Killer arrangement. Cool vibe.
Super playing.

Thanks Stone!

Well, that was all sorts of awesome with a side of killer. Could definitely listen to a whole album of that on the daily. Great job! Love the gain you're using and how it makes your chugs extra crispy. What sort of gear did you use?

Thanks! Glad you dig it.
Thanks dude, for that it was a Greco LPC with alinico 8 pickups my friend made, Fortin TS9 boosted Mesa triple rec multi watt with a parametric eq in the loop into a Fryette PS100 with York Audio Mesa cab IRs. Listening to it in the car yesterday and I probably should have cranked up the bass more, oh well. Bass was a MIJ Fender Pbass into a peppers dirty tree into a Darkglass Microtubes 900 v2 using Celestion speakermix pro bass IRs.

Ok, I'm not gonna have time to do anything original this week, but I didn't want to miss out on the first week submission, so here's a cover of one of my all-time favorite songs I threw together this morning.

The drums are one of the GarageBand automated drummers

Everything else you hear is:
- Gibson Les Paul Standard
- Marshall DSL40CR
- York Audio IRs (Matchless 212 + Bassman 410)

Reverb, compression, and delay are from GarageBand

Even though it's not an original, I still learned a ton from doing this. Every time I record I'm reminded of what a horrible tendency I have to push and be in front of the beat.. I need to work on my timing in general. This was a really good reminder of that.

The hardest part to record was actually the rhythm guitar that's just plunking out chords under the whole song. Keeping that steady was challenging. At first I tried to do it in sections, but I realized there was too much discrepancy if I didn't do it all through in one take.

Another thing I'm learning listening back to this is that my reference headphones are super bass heavy so this sounds WAY thinner and brighter than what I thought I was mixing. Definitely something I'll have to keep in mind next time

Very cool and very chill. I really like that the guitars are in two totally places yet fit so well.

Damn that was fast! Fit right in with the drums. wow :beer
Thanks bro! I was trying for stock speed of 210 bpms but my wrist was like no fkn way dude lol

That is some killer thrash riffing! And I love that you took it to the next level by adding video. Nice work
Thanks man, I usually try to put some kind of vid together if I can, it just makes it more fun.

Holy Hell! We have a Mother FAKA! on the scene. :headbang

Holy f**k dude. You should call Papa Het and tell him you have some sweeter riffs he can borrow. :love

That was/is amazing!
Thanks man! Hetfield definitely had a lot to do with shaping my ways, now if I could only maintain that down picking speed lol

Great submissions all (y) I only hope to be worthy :)

Here's a cross of blues, jazz, electro, rock, and probably other things I'm forgetting :) It's called "Strange Cold Blues" and includes some cool visuals. All original. I produced, played or programmed everything.

Gear used in production; Roland TD-17, Yamaha CP73, Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave, Novation Bass Station, Sequential PRO3, Fractal FM9, GS Music e7, UDO Super 6, Arturia PolyBrute, Arturia MatrixBrute, Arturia Stage 73 V2, Arturia Wurli V2, Arturia FX Collection, Moog Animoog Z, ExpressiveE Noisy, Exer Serum, Valhalla Delay, Valhalla Shimmer, PRS S2 Standard, PRS CE-24, Fender MLB Stratocaster, Valhalla Supermassive,

Woa... that synth at 0:18 caught me off guard, what a trip man!

Here`s a little song i wrote... :rimshot ( my submission )
I dont like to sit and tweak a song for days and days, so a lot of my music is just a `demo` quick and easy and on to the next one

I use Cubase 10.5 as my DAW
Drums : Toontrack SD3 ( Modern Metal High preset )
I used my `modeler` on bass and guitar.
My guitar is a Yamaha PAC 611 and my bass is a 5 string Dingwall

Guitar track - Mesa Boogie Studio Pre Capture with Mesa Trad S UKV30 90`s cab and Bogner Uber V30 cab ( Pan L & R and 70 % and 70% ) sometimes with a Tape Delay (mono)
Bass Track - Mesa Boogie CA 400+ Ch 2 Model with Darkglass 212 Neo Cab + with Izotope Nectar Bass preset. On Bass DI track I used Darkglass B7k plugin ( cutting a lot of lows, and this is used just to get some `Clank`

Master Plugin- Izotope Ozone 10

Awesome work man! That was modeler? Sounder great in my headphones, I need to listen thru my monitors laters too. Good stuff!
No kidding. I should’ve gone first before I saw how much talent is on here, lmao. I’m such a hack compared to everyone else here. :wat

Is There Anybody Out There - Pink Floyd (cover, obviously)
Gear Used:
- Martin D28
- iPhone

Oh well - I wanted to play along too. BUT - I leave in 2 days for a 10-day vacation with my lovely wife - just the two of us on the white sand beaches of Anguilla. Be jealous! 😉

And as such - I’m slammed trying to get work done in prep for the trip and I don’t have time to figure out how to record into Logic, or make up a song to the drum tracks, or any of that. So just to get a submission in, I thought I’d post this very “non metal” fingerpicking song I’ve been working on…flubs and all. (Is it just me, or as soon as you start recording your fingers immediately forget where to go!? Grr…)

Very nice job there sir. You did two things I could never do, playing an acoustic while being filmed. I always thought in my older age I'd get more into playing clean and with acoustics but I don't think I got what it takes for that or something. Envious of those that do though for sure. 🤙

Man, I put a dress on this pig. Gave it a little Lipo. Took the dress off. Put it back on. Added some makeup.
Took off the dress and all of the makeup off. Ended up with a pissed off pig.

If this qualifies as an ode I guess it is an ode to Power Trios. It's just Guitar, Bass, and some of Drew's Drums.

I changed the tempo and time sig. Of course, had to go with 9/8. :watWhy not? Dropped the tempo, too. (90-ish)
Maybe you can guess which drum file it was from Drew's shared files. :idk

Used my Charvel DK24 in drop D. Devin Townsend's Fractal Gift of Tone Preset in the FM3--as is, with the Drive
engaged. That Herbert Ch.3 was a little too thick with the Drive bypassed. Alsoi I disabled the Delay. Everything
else was unchanged from that Preset.

Bass is a Squier Paranormal Jazz Bass. I used Tom Hamilton from Aerosmith's Fractal Gift Of Tone Preset, Scene 3
Drive. Changed nothing. Sounded good to me so I rolled with it.

Both tracks are pretty much from the first few run throughs. Even got a "You can't get feedback from a modeler,"
section in there for the haters and naysayers. :rawk

I messed with this thing so much, and ended just up going back to some of the first "scratch" tracks I played. WTF
is up with that? Stripped it all back down. First thought, best thought sort of thing? I don't know.

Also, I found Dropbox had more fidelity in playback than Soundcloud when uploading. Soundcloud was stealing
some dBs and compressing it more. Not sure why? Maybe it is to get you to buy one of their packages. Just a guess.

I may dress this pig back up and share it later this week. We'll see. I like this stripped back version. A pig
is still just a pig, right? :idk

DAW: Reaper
Interface: Tascam Model 12
Plug-ins: Totally in the box with what Reaper has. Just Comped and EQ'd the bass and drums,
and High-passed the guitar to trim some of the fat off the pig. :rofl
Very cool man! Came out great. I always wondered if soundcloud was compressing and stuff. I logged into my account to find I have like 5% space left lol... then I remembered why I stopped using it, that and the weird ass spam bot messages I'd get lol

Here is my Do Something. Just a cover of Gilmour 5AM.

A Frankenstrat I made with a cheap body and a scalloped neck from AliExpress. Harmonic Design Z-90 pickups, Axe-FX III, Omnisphere, Cakewalk

That was cool. And dig how that scalloped neck looks. I tried one once and I just can't do it. I lack the finesse to play on a scalloped neck, I press down way too hard and pick even harder... I accept the life as a rhythm guitarist lol.

I hereby humbly submit my contribution to this week's TGF challenge.
I chose the Hard Rock MIDI file and wrote a little Gothic Metal / Rock tune. Really enjoyed the challenge to keep the MIDI file untouched (apart from slightly increasing the tempo) and fit my ideas into the predetermined structure.

Gear used:
- Fender MiJ Modern Strat w. EMG 85/66
- PRS S2 Custom 22 w. EMG 81/66
- Fender Player Precision w. EMG P
- Fractal Audio FM3
- Line 6 Helix Native
- ML Sound Lab & OwnHammer IRs
- EZdrummer 3 w. Death Metal EZX
- PreSonus Quantum 2
- Cubase 12 w. FabFilter, PSP & Valhalla plugins

Awesome man! I really like the harmonies layered in that beginning 0:16 - 0:29 🔥

Wow that was nice man. I've never used garageband before but I have to say it sounded really good on my headphones. Nice job!

LOVE all the tones and layering in this!!! Outstanding, man!!!

That’s exactly how I end up writing over an existing drum track, just throw a bunch of stuff down and see what sticks. And I also prefer printing everything wet. Not sure if that’s a holdover from recording back in the day without any outboard gear or what, but I never feel like I’m selling myself short by doing so.

Tight work, man!

Thanks Drew!

If anyone has feedback on the tones, let me know. Curious if the guitars sound too bright or dark.

Love this. Especially those bends that start around the 30 second mark. Good stuff!

Love it, kind of a heavy dark post grunge vibe!

Pussed out. I have some twists and turns I want to do but time is not on my side. Or desire to customize drum patterns (thanks Rev \m/). I'll listen to everyone's with fresh ears tomorrow with any luck

Where's the Trumpets? :idk

That was badass, JT. The thought in my head when I was listening was if Jim Martin from Faith No More
didn't quit the biz and become an organic pumpkin farmer he
would have released a track that sounded exactly like that. :beer
