Modelers Losing Their Luster

I honestly dont care to get into semantics about whether the audio engineer definition of distortion should apply, or the guitarists…

But I do think folks are missing out on hearing the glory of “power tube distortion” by thinking it’s only there once it sounds like an overdrive pedal has been kicked in.

Anybody that’s plugged into a deluxe reverb and played it at past 0.5 on the volume knob has heard the character that tube poweramp nonlinearities can impart on the sound.

Agree with that.

Now I'm off to go and read a book and pretend that blowjobs are the same as cunnilingus.

Yep, and tubes always have a slight amount of distortion regardless of the signal fed into them. Even a Twin Reverb has measurable distortion, though most people aren't going to actually hear it as such.
You realize its wholly dependent on input signal.
And no amp has measurable clipping, let alone distortion with the volume above 0.5.

Heres a Trainwreck clone on a scope.

Discussing the differences between saturation and distortion is pretty meaningless as the transition usually is happening quite seamlessly. To come up with a clear distinction between the two you'd have to draw a "stop, from here on it's called distortion" line. And nobody does that.

Inspired by Laxu's post.

Are you tired of 1000s of models?
Yes, but *insert brand* knows how to convince me and makes me think I need them all… when in reality I just need one good model, three is awesome.
Downsizing to something smaller/simpler?
Yes. Always. It’s a struggle. But *insert brand* fools me with weird products that has it all (focused convincing strategy) but with limiting factors that renders “it all” useless and only causes option paralysis.
Going back to amps?
Nope. Maybe… home playing in my case isn’t fun with a real amp.
Purging all modelers?
Done it several times now. 3 stomp, 1 PG, 2 LT. It’s exactly what they want me to do.
Was it just GAS that passed?
what passed is the realization that I’m letting *brand* convince me that I need their product, when it actually is what I really don’t need.
You've grown to hate modelers?
Yes.
Ain't nobody got time for that?
Exactly. Time is very important and *brand* does not respect my time.
How's your back?
Better now when I haven’t touched anything for a few months :p
all my issues is not the *brand* fault. They do what they do and cannot cater to the one person that has obvious problems with handling what they offer. But at least, now i decide for my self what I actually need. The latest “one” made me chuckle and convinced me even further that I never need to return to that brand again. Need to focus on what makes me happy.

After getting the UA Dream and Lion I have zero interest in anything else. The fight isn't there anymore, it just sounds and feels amazing.

Ok... Maybe an UA multieffects? :idea:love

Nice to see you again! I've been GAS free for a while and for the foreseeable future, thanks to the HX Stomp, their 3.7 update esp. Been doing live gigs now regularly, and I think that's helped me refocus on the music and playing, and also taught me that the Stomp, along with a simple switcher/foot switch and an expression pedal can pretty much let me do anything on stage and recording at home.

@the swede also, curious, what's your current guitar gear. If you still have the HXS, I can't wait to hear what post-rock stuff you can do with the new reverbs (bloom and non-linear), and the feedbacker too.

Even though I’m thoroughly enjoying owning a killer tube amp again, I’ll still be primarily getting my tones via the AxeFX in the studio. I’m not sure something will ever come along that’ll move the needle of creativity available in one spot like that thing has.

Weird thing is I do this the Helix all the time. Pick an IR, pick an amp, turn the standard knobs, and play. Option paralysis/constant deep diving isn’t the gears fault, nor is it necessary.

It’s not an option paralysis tweaking thing, it’s just that the IRX sounds better right out of the gate. It doesn’t have as much spiky high end or low end flub going on. It sounds great at all gain levels and takes drive pedals fantastic.

Would be really cool to see other amp versions, like a good AC30 or BF Fender.

Are you tired of 1000s of models?
Nope Variety is the spice of life and you never know when one model or another will come in handy
Downsizing to something smaller/simpler?
Fm9 and 2 Powercabs is alls I need
Going back to amps?
Never: 1) no need , 2) way too expensive
Purging all modelers?
Only have a Fm9 so def not purging
Was it just GAS that passed?
No, was what i needed for my goals that i want to achieve
You've grown to hate modelers?
Quite the Opposite
Ain't nobody got time for that?
Def have all the time I need to enjoy my FM9
How's your back?
Perfectly fine

Current gear is basically nothing. Yeah. Stomp had to go. As much as I love it and appreciate it, this time the purge was all about resetting myself. Haven’t touched gear or guitar in a few months and still don’t plan to. It’s all a big part of my mental reset. I had a musical/mental breakdown and had to let go of the gear physically to cure myself mentally. Can’t have things like Stomp or PG lying around if my “disorder” and personality issues makes me not use them in a sane and healthy way, enjoying music and being creative.

It isn’t the stomp… or any gear… it’s just me. It could be great… but it’s just me.

But my guitar, the only and most important part, is still here and ready for whenever i start my jurney back into it. :)

Don’t even now about the latest updates and new products because i cleared everything so nothing shows up in my YT or Instagram. And that’s how i want it for now. Came in here lurking just now, and notice a lot happens in a few months, including the news and updates. Can happily point out that for the first time in many years, I don’t actually care and this is also a big part of the mental reset process.

So that’s that. I’ll drop in now and than. Thanks buddy :)
