NMD: Two Notes Opus

I hate to compare the 2, or detract someone from getting an Opus and/or Genome... but compared to something like HX stomp and/or Native...
HX wins every time for me in functionality, tone, stability, etc. If anyone is thinking of stepping into modeling, you'd be better served going HX over Opus. Or even Pod Express over Opus if pricing is the concern. Just my 2 cents.

Genome is a resource hog too, at least that's my experience with it. There are some really greats sounds though.

There are too many ways to skin the cat now.

Afaict, the Opus is a modern day redbox (takes power through to cab) that applied a speaker sim. It also has some direct amps that can be used with power amp and cab sim. And it has a noise gate and three post FX (eq module, enhancer, and reverb).

If compared to an HX stomp (or any mfx) as an all in one direct solution, the Opus will come up short.

I think this is primarily for use with real amps, and offers DI amps as a supplement or backup. Its not clear to me if this can be used to add additional channels to a connected amp? The Opus connects between the amp and speaker, so it likely wouldn't be able to play its amp sim through an amp's speaker unless there was some kind of loopback or 4cm with the actual amp. If they designed for this scenario, it might be a pretty cool box, to handle speaker sim and monitor mix, while also adding channels to your existing amp.

If it cant do that, its just a redbox with a usb connection and software. Meh.

This is just another way to skin the cat.

Yeah, I didn't mean to discredit its utilitarian purposes, especially considering the cost and what you get. I'm definitely coming more from a sound perspective so take that for what it is.

Will you have to give up the Genome license? That is the kicker...
Hmmm, I’m not sure if that is a thing honestly. If I recall correctly I was given Genome as a beta tester and purchased Opus after that.

Short answer is, not selling Opus is well worth keeping Genome unless the price of re-purchasing Genome today is significantly less than a used Opus will bring me which is doubtful.

I like Opus, it is a great Swiss Army knife but, like my Swiss Army knife, it just sits in a drawer hardly touched because I have a collection of better blades and tools I reach for first…

Genome/Opus doesn't best what I've got going on with HX. My Stomp is sticking around, still have my big floorboard, and Native gets used on everything from guitars to drums to vocal busses.

I only really need the amp DI so I've been going back and forth, thinking about returning the Opus and getting a Cab M+ instead but the extras seem like some good rainy day fun.

Yep, I've even considered making some kind of weird synth, experimentation only board/creation station and use these little modelers like the Opus and Pod express for that purpose only. Throw in a mixing board and some other odd pedals I have laying around for additional weirdness. Could be cool, and more purpose driven. I really feel like the guitar stuff is already covered between the HX, VP4 and real amps.

If you only need the amp DI, then get Behringer GI100.
I have their DI400P for a bog standard DI. If you've been following, I wanted one with onboard IR loading (y)

The Opus seems to be a gussied-up CAB M (which I've owned for 4 years now).

The CAB M more than excels at what it was designed for: Hardware speaker iR loader.
The Cab M+ even comes with a Genome license!

Yeah, I haven't fucked with Genome yet... I have NAM.
I’m hoping (wishing?) NAM support would find its way to the Opus (even if only standard captures only), as a way to integrate with Genome.

Spending a little more time with the DynIRs in Opus, they're okay.. Some of them have different mics that the others don't have. I really like an SM7b or M160 on most cabs, but those aren't always available.

I have NAM, NAM-U, and now Genome. The Genome capture loader (CODEX) has some really cool options.

Is there a York pack you recommend?
I love the MRSH M20 and MRSH 412 M25. Sweet sounding is the best way I know how to describe them. Very musical to me.

I plan to try the 5153 412 EV20 pack next. It’s what my solo physical 4X12 is IRL life so I’m curious. Personally I love York products although every one of them might not be for my taste. Yet, they are consistently well produced and I like the variation each pack offers. This allows me to find something (usually) that I was exactly looking for. Big Fan.

RE: York Audio.

I have:

- VX30 212 BLUE (Celestion Blue)
- FTWN 212 D120 (JBL D120)
- HWAT 412 FN50 (Fane 50W)
- MRSH 412 BLK (G12H30 Celestion Blackback)
- MRSH 412 M25 (G12M 25W Celestion Greenback)
- MRSH 412 M20 (G12M 20W Celestion Greenback)

And they're all excellent.

"Plays well with others"

Obviously a strong use case for the Opus. Getting some great tones out of this combo.
$270 amp sim + $260 delay + $50 overdrive :rofl

That’s pretty close to the price of an HX Stomp. 😂
Yeah! So you can see how I thought long and hard about this. I'm so glad I got this used. For about $150 I could have gotten a used Cab M+ for an Amp DI with IR loading and would have been all set on that front. Less than $50 more got me their TSM preamps in the Opus.
