Helix 3.8 when?

A buddy and I are big Coen Brothers fans and saw Fargo opening weekend in Tucson; he's from Wisconsin, I'm from South Dakota. The only other people in the theater were a couple in the very back.

We were laughing at everything—the accents, the clothing (my dad had the exact same parka as Jerry Lundegaard in the gif above), the platitudes, the home decor, the salt shakers on the table... It was all just so dead on from where and when we grew up.

On the way out, the guy from the back row stopped us and disclosed he was an off-duty cop. He was 100% convinced we were on drugs because he found nothing funny about Fargo in the slightest. Ended up having to explain why it was funny for him to leave us alone.

Still in my top 5 movies of all time.

I don’t want or need a smaller device, lol. If you don’t want the big hog there are several options. I see no reason to cripple the unit to gain 3” of space.
I'd embrace the thought of expression being outboard/optional.

On the other hand most, of the times that a MI gear company thought going full-on modular was "the future", products ended up being the greatest of clusterfucks, and didn't exactly fare (or age) well.

That’s great, I love Fargo, definitely one of my top 5 too. I’m from nowhere near ND and I laugh every time I watch it. Leave it to a cop to have no sense of humor and assume anyone who does is on drugs.

While I sort of agree, it's really just sort of. Especially with the HX Floor the onboard EXP was "make it or break it" several times for me. Without it, it'd fit a suitase I often use. Or a typical backpack. Or one side of a double gigbag. But due to the pedal it didn't. Seriously, not one of the main reasons for me to sell it, but still among the top 5.

I think Boss has the right size with the GT-1K, and it doesn’t have to give up any function to achieve it.

Nope there aren't. I want full powered Helix, not half powered HX.

Check out Quad Cortex to see how much space can be saved :)

If for nothing else, a defenite no-go because of the utterly stupid spacing between the upper and lower switch rows. Their hardware UI designer needs to be fired. Or moved to NDSP's middle-earth division, because Hobbits apparently are much more suitable customers.

I'd actually prefer a bit bigger than that. More space between footswitches. There is a nice half way between QC and Helix LT.
That’s where the GT-1K is a great size. Smaller the the Floor/LT without making switching something that requires direct visual effort without limited the features by removing the EXP pedal. I had limited time with the QC but my size 11 wide feet were not made for that layout if I was going to do anything besides hover over my pedalboard and the desktop-ability doesn’t matter to me, I’d prefer a software editor if I’m at a desk so I can still operate the switches with my feet. I might give the the GT-1K another spin for live just because L6 doesn’t seem interested in “cool” parameter modulations that Boss and Fractal have. I can always use Native in the studio for the amp tones.

For all the funny memes about how bad the Tonex software is, just wait till you see how insanely worthless the GT-1000 software is! At least Tonex gets updates

I don’t want captures/profiles anyways, but the GT Editor appears functional and that’s all I really need in that regard. Seems there have been updates/additions in recent years. And while I’m certainly happy with the updates and upgrades to the HX platform I’ve been invested in since the beginning, I don’t think any of them have really effected my usage of the device since snapshots were added when it comes to performance.

Its sad, its my one piece of gear that just sits there unused. The harmonizer is horrible, the fixed FX types are a PITA, there's no VST for it, a lot of what makes the Helix easy and fast to use is beyond impossible on it.

On the other hand, for the schools' shows, it is small, and does exactly what we need from it....just lord forbid one of the kids hits the wrong button and can never get back to where they were compared to pretty much any other of the floor units. For utility the GP-200 smokes it to bits...Hoping to trade the GT1000 for a wing or X32 or something

Well, the desktop editor is ok. A little quirky here and there but solid overall.

However, their mobile editor apparently hasn't seen any love since the last time I was checking it out. I just installed the latest version and while it might be better than nothing on a phone, it's quite an offense towards human intelligence, UI design in general and what not with the tablet version - which doesn't evern seem to be a dedicated version, it's just the phone editor enlarged.
No landscape mode, to edit blocks you have to hold-press them (WTF? already) and click on a back arrow to get back to the signal flow display to select a different block. Within landscape mode the editor could work similarily to the desktop version (block select and signal flow area on top with the parameters displayed below). Heck, the knobs are *so* big you can't even have all amp parameters on one page - and there's just 12 parameters per amp, so on most 10" tablets there'd be plenty of space. Now we're all the way in WTF?!?-land.
I can only hope not having to use it often (my plans are to create a template for the global blocks in an app such as TouchOSC).

Maybe enough of that in a Helix thread...

You know you are about 150% right that the GT1k is exactly the right size...I just put it up against my board and my evil giant monstrosity could be so much smaller at that size. Would be nice to have one or two more switches though

Maybe the LT could have been smaller and that would have been optimal? (Referring to space between top row of foot switches and knobs below screen)

Double height on FM9 makes big difference. Should be default going forward on double rows.

I’m of the opinion that a “flagship” floor modeler without an expression pedal is an incomplete device. The FM9, TMP, and QC are all incomplete devices. They have pedal effects you can’t use until you purchase another piece of equipment.
I completely agree, I respect the enthusiasm and need of people to find new and sophisticated formulas for the expression pedal...but personally I have chosen the line6 products generation after generation because they are raw tools, they are literally war tanks and they bring "Almost" everything I want...I only ask that public opinion does not transform them into devices for ladies! (sarcasm)
