Fractal Talk

I can't talk but it has to be tens of thousands?
I lost ~$10K between Reverb and Paypal for all of my gear flipping last year and I think I churned close to $70k?

But seriously, even though I didn't understand that, at all, sounds like you make good use of it.
You definitely have to get creative if you want the FM3 3 footswitches to work alone. If it had just one more footswitch I wouldn't complain too much as that's 4 scenes which at least for me is typically the minimum to cover a good amount of stuff in one preset. Now one of those needs to be a hold function, then another for tuner, then a hold function for layout switch to access tap tempo etc.

So in the end 3 footswitches = tap dancing. One convenience feature you can program in is that the currently active footswitch can do something else on a second press. I use this for "go to previously selected scene" functionality on my FC-12.

I churned $60K-$80k in gear for 3 consecutive years. Bought an house with the proceeds. Glad I don't have to do that again.

Not a lifestyle I would want to continue indefinitely. Have to be kind of nuts (or a lot!) to go that far, with all your days and
night consumed with turning and burning.

You mean buying something used when you spot a bargain, selling for profit? I can see that turning into a fulltime job.

I find it surprising Gasp hasn't found his way over here yet.

I've always found him to be a decent and funny guy. His immense experience with nearly every piece of gear under the sun can be an asset. But sometimes, because he goes through the stuff so relentlessly and so quickly, it can cast doubt on the depth of the experience.

Something tells me he'll be here soon!

I put myself through college flipping gear. Dawn of the internet, pre-Google. It was much easier before anyone could easily figure out what something was worth.
For sure. My current way of calculating the price on the used market is "is it <= 70% Thomann's price?" and that's usually pretty good indicator. I overpaid a bit for my used Strymon Deco V2 only because that pedal is almost never for sale used here.

Yeah seems like a nice dude with a shopping problem.

Having done both, I agree the FC does adds convenience. No brainer if the pricing was closer to Helix Control levels. Helix Control is a FC-12 equivalent at 379 €. The FC-12 costs 885 €. Helix LT is 1099 €.

But it really comes down to your needs. If you don't care about things like tracking which blocks are on/off in footswitches, or scene selection carrying over presets (I usually default my presets to scene 1 anyway), then MIDI controller for scene/preset changes, tap tempo and tuner type stuff is more than good enough.

The Morningstar controller Fractal integration might be worth the extra cost as it should potentially track scenes and some other stuff. I haven't looked too into it.
I‘ve been using a Morningstar MC6 Pro lately with my FM9. I’ve thought about getting an FC6 but I’m holding off for now for a few reasons:

1. A already own the Morningstar.
2. It’s smaller.
3. The Fractal integration is working for me.

I have the MC6 set up to show scenes, presets, tuner (it becomes a second tuner display), tap tempo, and scene up and down. I leave my FM9 on a layout thats only effect on/off switches so it’s like a pedalboard. The nice thing about the integration is when scenes or presets is selected, the MC6 display changes to show a scene or preset with names for each switch like the FM9 would. It’s easy to jump around.

The downsides are it only shows 6 scenes or presets in their respective modes, programming and power. Power is easy to solve with a usb power bank and I can live with only using 6 scenes on a preset (especially when gapless arrives for the FM9). Programming isn’t bad but will never be as simple as an FC6.

It sits on a small board with expression pedals that takes up less space than an FC6. My next step is to plug the expression pedals into the MC6 and use MIDI controllers for everything. Then setup will only be plugging in the MIDI cables and usb power.

The one upside of the MC6 is it’s a multi tool. It can be used with any MIDI device and non-MIDI devices. For example, I’ve used it as sustain and damping pedals with my digital piano and as a usb MIDI host. It has relay switch ports to switch devices or amps. Word is step ladder resistance is coming so it can switch devices using that method too. I’ve just scratched the surface with it. It’s a super powerful tool. Because of the extreme flexibility I can’t see myself selling it even if I do get an FC6 one day.

In other news, Fractal just acquired a stock JCM800 2203, all original from the 80s in pristine condition.
I hope it makes it in this year, 2023 is the year of the 2203.

Yes, it always struck me as odd they modeled the 2204 but not the 03.
