Fractal Talk

I went nuts in Kemper land. By FAR the one piece I had to a Gasp level of times. Everything else I seem to be good at twice. The churn will never stop for me but I try at least be congnizant that I am doing it if nothing else :rofl

Same, I really need to list mine. I get sucked into “it’s plug and play and has the best feel” when I know nothing is really ever plug and play in this world. It’s a good piece of gear just kind of limited compared to others at this point.

In other news, Fractal just acquired a stock JCM800 2203, all original from the 80s in pristine condition.
I hope it makes it in this year, 2023 is the year of the 2203.

This one:

I really feel that a great JCM800 could be the desert island amp. You can do just about anything you want with it, given the right boosts. So I’m excited to see how this turns out compared to the current Brit 800.

The only thing I have ever missed is that single profile I used for gigging. I have never been able to recreate it, no matter what other gear I've used. It's nothing complex either; just a profile that struck me. Other than that; ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Man, I don't like when the FM9 is lumped in with that. The "big dog" is a rack, which I just don't want any part of these days. If the Axe-FX 3 somehow existed in floorboard form, I'd pay the extra and grab it with no delay. But I don't wanna do anything modular anymore....no Axe-FX III.

The price I pay for that preference is delayed "middle child" firmware development.

Yep, see my “Fractal Users” thread for the evolution of me getting super annoyed watching Axe 3 development while waiting for trickle down FM3 updates, all the way to just selling the FM3 for the rack unit :D

I just play at home, and that’s still probably not changing any time soon with a house full of kids. So the Axe 3 lives on a rack shelf with an FC12 on the floor and hooked up to FC Edit on my computer.

Yeah it's definitely nicer to use than MIDI controllers since there's less programming needed from the user.

My only beef with the FC controllers is the cost. Also, I think a FC8 would have been the perfect size.

I tried running the Helix as a MIDI controller for my FM3 when I had that combo but it was a pain to manage. Fully integrated FC controllers are just so much easier to deal with.

For me the FC12 just like all my other gear is overkill, but nicer to have more than necessary instead of not enough. No compromises really.

I think at the core of it is how my preferences drift around. Some weeks I like a bright tone and others I like a warmer one. With Kemper I’m kind of locked in, but with the Fractal and other modelers it’s easier to adjust the cabs.

Like for instance earlier this year I was laying down tracks for a song with the Kemper and was loving the tones in solo, all my favorite MBritt profiles. But then when I added in drums, all the guitars were completely lost in the mix because they were so dark and muffled. I had to massively EQ them to get something passable. But any of the other modelers I could just swap out the cab block and get something significantly better.

MIDI with an Axe can't be all that bad?

Asking for a friend with a MIDI Cap'n and solid MIDI chops.

Well I think a lot of big time artists are using RJM controllers and that has to be all MIDI, right? I think MIDI works really well when you are very explicit about what you want. Like having one preset per song, one scene per part of the song, etc. It’s when you want more flexibility or you aren’t sure about your setup or constantly rearranging, that’s probably going to be a pain.

Calling @Bruce

Actually I think Bruce's issue is with MIDI clock, or something like that.
I have 2 issues. 1 no midi clock send. The work around is send it from somewhere else to the axefxIII. The other issue is the boot sequence is important when the axefxIII is receiving midi data. Best case is boot the axefxIII first before any other midi device. I use widi jacks and have had some issues to work thru. Not entirely solved but I’ve got it reliable and working now so I’m 8 out of 10 happy with my midi environment. I also know switches on the FM9 do not send any midi by default, it has to be programmed and I think you may lose function of that switch. I might be wrong about that but if so, this makes programming my songs a bit harder.
Make no mistakes though, given all the pluses of the fractal stuff, this to me is pretty minor in the overall value of their product. FAS is a huge win in my book.

I think the midi implementation can get pretty involved and specific with the FAS stuff. My personal midi uses involve midi over Bluetooth from an iPad in live shows. I use a kitchen sink preset and switch block channels, toggle blocks on and off and it works perfect for this. You can change presets and I’m pretty sure scenes as well. I’ve never needed to. There is also a midi block that will send a PC change when you load the preset which is pretty cool. I used to use that before I discovered widi. Now I just put widi jacks on everything.

MIDI doesn't sound so bad?

Ideally I'd have a rack processor and a TC BAM on top of my 2x12, and my MIDI Cap'n wirelessly controlling said rack processor from afar.

I'm not gigging or even jamming with anyone outside of my home and family so I can't justify all of this, but a man can dream.
