Fractal Talk

If it were very close for me between Fractal and Line 6, it would be the "little things" that pushed me to Fractal:

They're a small company here in the US, vs. a giant, to me, faceless, corporation in Japan. I live in the US, not Japan, and I always prefer giving my money to a small business.

Cliff is quite dedicated to his customers, so much so that he once answered a forum-member's post, within a half-hour, while he was at a gig setting up and having problems.

That personal touch thing seals it for me.

While Line 6 is a big company, I think Digital Igloo does an excellent job at interacting with the customers (and tire kickers/critics). Sure, they can't decide on a whim to implement a customer request in the same way Fractal can, but I don't think there's a lot left for customers to ask for at this point. Except Marshalls, of course. :rofl

Another reason I never kept my floor modeler on the floor because I don't like the idea of stomping and kicking where the brain is.
Even placing the floor unit on the floor night after night (which I don't) is an unnecessary mechanical shock that is avoided with a rack unit.
Also, the amount of dirt accumulation on floor units is huge, it gets filthy in no time.
Just a few things I took into consideration.

As far as third party Midi foot controllers.
110$ on Aliexpress, super versatile in terms of midi capability and a big improvement over last gen "midi commander" type units/clones.

I'm not in the market for an AxeFXIII, but if I were, I'd rather have a Fractal FC series foot controller than a MIDI controller, despite the fact that they are *absurdly* expensive for what they are, especially outside the US.

Having done both, I agree the FC does adds convenience. No brainer if the pricing was closer to Helix Control levels. Helix Control is a FC-12 equivalent at 379 €. The FC-12 costs 885 €. Helix LT is 1099 €.

But it really comes down to your needs. If you don't care about things like tracking which blocks are on/off in footswitches, or scene selection carrying over presets (I usually default my presets to scene 1 anyway), then MIDI controller for scene/preset changes, tap tempo and tuner type stuff is more than good enough.

The Morningstar controller Fractal integration might be worth the extra cost as it should potentially track scenes and some other stuff. I haven't looked too into it.

You might be able to "get" a different controller to work with the Axe, but you'd be spoiling a big part of the
experience if you go with something other than an FC....IMHO.
Programming midi controller with FAS gear is, um; not fun

In pot calling the kettle black news; this has got to be his 10th FM3. At least.

I had a Morningstar MC8 that I used with my FM3. I wound up selling it and just using the FM3 alone. The Fractal foot switches are just so much better on a gig. Way more visible and reliable.

And how did you feel about "only" having 3 switches? Did you use them as double-function, and did you switch layouts?
I'm just curious how an FM3 can be set up to do more than it may seem at first, in a real-life gig situation.

Well… I do have a dual foot switch attached to one of the FM3 expression inputs, so I’m kind of cheating. ;)

This gets complicated, sorry…

I use song mode on the FM3.. more for organizational purposes than anything really. They aren’t really ”songs” per se. Just organized collections of sounds from different presets.

I set up the 3 foot switches to switch between “songs” with long presses on the 1st and 3rd switches scrolling between banks of 3 songs at a time. The center FM3 foot switch has a hold on it that takes it to “section” mode for that particular song. Section mode has access to all 6 song sections with 3 assigned to the FM3 foot switches when entering section mode and the other 3 available when you single press each of the 3 switches. There is a hold on the center foot switch in that mode that gets me back to song mode again.

The dual foot switch is set up as 2 stand in switches in the layout. The left switch engages a 3db boost and the right increases the reverb mix. Holding the left takes me back to the main foot switch layout menu so I can get to the looper and other functions. Holding the right engages the tuner.

Stand in switches are very well thought out on the Fractal. You even get feedback on the main screen when you engage them so you can tell what you’ve changed.

I hope he never calculates how much money he's lost constantly buying, selling and rebuying the same things. To me it makes no sense.

My pattern is usually something like:

- Buy a new thing -> Try it for the return period if new (14 days by law in EU if bought online, 30 days from Thomann) -> Keep or return.
- Buy a used thing -> Try it out for at least a few weeks -> Keep for N years or sell.

I've sold plenty of good gear just because I wanted something different, and I don't buy anything without doing usually way too much research. Returns are generally a hassle so unless it's something as small as a pedal I take my time to buy.

Taking my time to research actually made me miss out on the relic Tele I posted yesterday. It was for sale by person A, got bought by person B before me, then B decided to sell it for whatever reason a few weeks later (in my city no less!), so I got lucky.

Ok, nevermind.

Nope, nope nope, you don't count! :rofl

But seriously, even though I didn't understand that, at all, sounds like you make good use of it.

I went nuts in Kemper land. By FAR the one piece I had to a Gasp level of times. Everything else I seem to be good at twice. The churn will never stop for me but I try at least be congnizant that I am doing it if nothing else :rofl
