What’s sad is that I remember back around 2008 or so, TOP was effectively the Fractal Forum on its own. Scott Peterson was even a very early Fractal owner, and he used to rave about it. Now it takes some effort to find a Fractal thread over there, it seems there was a mass exodus to greener pastures by the Fractal owners.
It was made aware we were no longer welcome.
What’s funny is that I started posting there during the pandemic, probably the Summer of 2020, it was very much Helix-dominant at the time, but I kept seeing people saying things like “Well this has always been the unofficial Fractal forum” and it never made sense to me until I learned more about it’s history.
And really, I’m only half-joking about it being made aware we were no longer welcome and I think there’s both some merit and some stereotypical TOP behavior in that. There have been plenty of times I’ve shaken my head at a Fractal owner shitting on something over there because it didn’t have the features a Fractal unit did, I mean, this thread wasn’t always called “Fractal Talk”, it was “Fractal Users” because of those types. So from that perspective, I can totally understand people being sick of seeing stuff like that.
But that bled into people trying to have a discussion about specs, without the -/+ or snark and it would be construed as “Well Fractal does it better so this is stupid” when someone is just trying to find out how a unit functions, just like is going on with the TMP now. That pretty much became the standard by the time I was an active poster there, if someone mentions Fractal in a comparative way, someone else is going to perceive it as “You just said my thing isn’t as good as your Fractal”
And uh….while you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to program a Fractal unit, you also can’t be a complete fucking moron and if you
are a complete fucking moron, trying to operate a Fractal unit might be like looking directly in a Complete Fucking Moron Mirror™. These wonderchild’s make up the Fractal Camp Survivors.
