... then you might want to make sure your input and output levels are right and then make sure you use appropriate output devices ...

Agree. I find that most of my effort with modellers is spent consistently making sure that I'm using the full dynamic range of the device at every stage of the signal chain. Using the full range of the converters, input levels, amp headroom, optimised output levels etc.

Not keeping all these ducks in a row can otherwise result in a flat and insipid tone from a modeller.

That's the one thing that's easier about plugging into a simple tube amp setup with maybe a couple of pedals. I don't mind that little bit of extra effort with modelling though; but I can see why some people might be frustrated by it, or not even realise how crucial this considered approach is.

As I posted up in another forum....we had a couple of back to back gigs in Ottawa, ON which is about 4.5-5 hours from where the gents in my band normally live but one of our members originally is from there.

We played a very cool club called Cafe Dekcuf and had an awesome show last Friday night to a really great and enthusiastic crowd. The sound man was really solid at the show came up to me before the 3rd set and said "the two of you have some of the most badass tones that I have ever heard running direct and super easy to setup here. Amazing! No mic, no cabinet on stage!" Apparently everyone uses amps all of the time there.

So my rig for the evening was.....

FM9 Turbo is awesome!
Yes...Note the Fender TMP that is my singer's new toy. He got rid of both his amp and pedalboard to get it. It sounds amazing as well contrary to what all of the bulletin board conspiracy theorists and naysayers who don't own the product have to say. He got some amazing tones right from starting it up. I love that unit as well and it is only going to get better with updates.

I made one trip to the stage with all of my gear and one trip back to the van. It was a blessing as we had to climb 2 flights of stairs to get to the upstairs area where the club is.

Night #2 was at the Convention Centre for a large Union Christmas party (aka Corporate gig!) and that crowd was amazing as well with over 200 people in attendance! All sounded great!

Absolutely bad ass Fender CS! I got it used as the original owner wasn't able to get it set it up properly and traded it in. Apparently he did this twice and I bought his other one as well from the retailer. LOL. :facepalm :bonk I saved a pile of $$$ compared to new.

I do this stuff professionally and all it took was a nice 25 degree full pocket wood shim that I custom made for both of them and a .10 custom metal shim under the locking nut and they are unbelievably amazing guitars to play now.

What FAS amp models and cab combinations were you primarily using out of curiousity?

Obviously this is the sort of annoying question asked by people that believe they will try the same "magic" combination and have the Grail Tone  ... so feel free to ignore me!

lol. it's ok I guess but they have a lot of work to do. Considering the price there are better options out there at the moment.

Agree. I hope they add alot of content and rework the screens to get more use out of the emptimness of the screen real estate. I would be curious to hear your band live . I mean the tmp isnt crap at all...we all know this. I think maybe it was rushed out without finishing the power amp modeling section and the ir compatability plus way too few fender models for it being a fender. There are so many amazing vintage fender amps that are cooler then the whole 65 line. Early marshals were based on the fender circuits but hotrodded.

I still think it's partly a whiplash effect from the TMP. People were waiting for some new-gen supermodeler, even though the existing stuff was still great. The TMP raised everyone's expectations and then deflated almost as fast, leaving people with new gear blueballs. So I bought an FM9 and JT bought the full Axe III :rofl
again i think people are reacting to the slick gui screen on the tmp and the convolution rvb. Thats the draw really. The knobs on the switches is also a draw for many and the fact its riding on the tonemaster name. But i wonder if the tmp had a non touch screen if it would be hailed as the holy grail? I know from what i read cliff isnt into touchscreens but i wonder if he thinks an updated gui is needed in the next phase of units? Can you imagine the fm10 or fm9tmk2 with a slicker gui?

I agree that those features are what is drawing people in. There was a good comment I recently saw here (can’t remember who said it): if the TMP didn’t have Fender’s name on it, it would be seen as a competitor to HeadRush Prime.

Honestly, pretty much the same as I always use.
I am a big fan of the Friedman BE and HBE C45 models. I change up a few parameters in these so that my ear likes what it hears. Usually I have the SAT switch on and adjust from there as well. I believe I run the Smallbox for the cleaner settings.

The big change for me was the dynacabs. I don't run the typical 57/121 combo. I use 121s on both cabs. I usually am using the Friedman cab and the angled Mesa cab. From there I cut off some of the highs and set the lows at 120hz to keep the bottom end in check. This is what works for me. Others have their own preferred settings.

I think I did a very slight adjustment to the align the cabs as well. Usually for live, I'm running a summed L+R output. Out 1 goes to my EV PXM and out 2 to goes to FOH.

Again, with the TMP comments....don't knock it until you try it live. My singer/Rhythm player likes a lot cleaner sound and it balances our style perfectly. What I am hearing at FOH sounds great to be honest with you. We went a bit deeper into it with the computer editor for setup. Sure, there are a few things that need to be updated but what I am hearing sounds great. No complaints.

Thanks for the thoughts and details @PBGas . 🙇‍♂️

I've not tried a "double ribbon" approach yet and it's fun to experiment, so I'll give that a go!
