Ughh I really didn't need to read this --->

A lot of it is about transient energy storage. A tube amp stores a LOT of energy. Take a typical 100W tube amp like a Diezel. It will typically have 220uF of reservoir capacitance and a B+ of 450V. The energy stored is 22.3 Joules!!!

Now take a typical consumer Class-D "500W" power amp (actual continuous power about 100W). They usually have voltage rails around 50V and 680uF or so of capacitance. The energy stored (assuming bipolar supplies) is 1.7 Joules.

The tube amp has over 13 times the energy storage. So those palm mute transients are reproduced accurately. The Class-D amp runs out of gas.

For example, if your transient duration is, say, 100ms, and you're pushing a full 100W then the energy required is 10 Joules. The Class-D amp simply can't do it.

It's one of my pet peeves. People use cheap, low-end, consumer grade Class-D power amps and then make bold proclamations that the models don't sound as good as the real amp without understanding even a lick of the physics involved.

I put an Axe-Fx through a Crown X2 once and it Marty McFly'd me.

Thank you very Much @FractalAudio

Yep. I’m not bothered by the Class D amps mainly due to the fact I haven’t had the need to crank the shit out of them. Every gig I did with them I was well under the 100-watt tube amp volume. At bedroom/living room levels I personally can’t tell a difference between a tube amp and a modeler, but I do not have any doubt that once things get cooking the differences will start showing considerably.

Nothing to speak of with my family, but my girlfriend is a descendant of King Henry the VIII! Not sure which of his dead wives was mom!!

Congrats to the Fractal product deliveries today! I LOVE swapping the tubes in both the amps and preamps. It just fascinates me how much of a difference the tubes alone can make. My favorites have pretty much been anything JJ or Tung. Not sure why but I have tested a LOT and I always end up settling on one of those, whether it is an 6V6GT Tung, EL84 JJ, KT66 JJ, 6CA7 JJ or other. Currently using the KT66 JJ in the FAS Buttery amp as my primary amp but have been playing with the FAS Class A as well. Preamp on the Buttery I am using the 12AX7A JJ. Fun stuff ;~))

Hey Cliff !

Not sure how to ask this so I'll be as "legal-ezy" as I can:-

=> is your idea or plan for a "hybrid" approach ie: Profiling Amp X in conjunction with the Amp Model of Amp X still a possibility (?) or is it essentially "off the table" ?

Genuinely interested and curious :)

Thanks,
Ben

Ben, you don't have to sign every post like it's a goddamn formal letter! :wat

Forever your humble servant,

But you do have to admit it gives it more of a personal touch.
