Boss GX 10 ..... Floor EFX Unit Anyone ?

This is actually a cool unit for people cobbling together preamp pedals. The biggest Boss gripe, at least for me, is the limitations of their amps.
Assuming the IR loader doesn't have some kind of Boss sauce in it, this would be a great IR/post-effects solution.
Same reason I'm hoping Fractal follows through with adding an IR loader to the VP4.(with poweramp sim too please)

There's always Boss sauce

Yep, there is definitely a "Boss way" of doing things and of course there is a sonic signature. The key to all of these devices is using them at their strengths and getting the best of them for what they are. That's why there is more than one horse in a horse race. 😎

Do you think you could distinguish between a preamp pedal played through a Boss IR, versus playing the same pedal through IRs hosted in QC, Kemper, Fractal, HX? Serious question. I definitely don't think I could. I know their amps have a sound, what's the sonic signature of a Boss IR loader?

You know what you could do with this that you can’t do with the Helix? Trigger a pitch sweep from the input envelope.

Basically that I should probably keep my opinions on these Boss units to myself!!

:bonk

Well you're dead-right on this one for sure. I've posted all the details at TOP as there is a lot of interest there, but in short:-

-> the USB Port is not a Midi Host
-> the USB Port does not receive any Midi-In data or Midi Sysex ... so adding say an MC6 is out of the question
-> it has no 5 Pin or TRS Midi I/O Jacks
-> it only sends and receives Midi data to and from a PC
-> whilst you have 15 Blocks, you are stuck with the 3 x onboard FSW's and can only add 2 x FSW via the Ctrl 2 and 3 1/4 Jack on the back - so no more than 5 in total

Here's the really "good" part .... you CAN add a Midi Foot Controller but it can ONLY be done via Bluetooth so you have to buy the B/Tooth Boss Plug, and then, the Bluetooth Plug on the GX 10 ONLY recognizes and works with the Boss B/Tooth pedals ...... turns a $399 unit into a $550 unit ..... and then you get the joy of the huge B/Tooth latency when changing anything ?!?!?!?!?

Turns what could have been an amazing unit for the money into a totally sh*t buy unless you are cool with just 5 x fSW's

Boss at their best !

Not trying to be a contrarian, but wouldn't that kind of eat into their own existing offerings....so they knew this going in.

Their answer probably is, well if you want that functionality, there is this....(Insert whatever product applies here).

So one person's shit, is another's gold..... depends on use case and budget....like with everything else.

I'm not arguing, just positing another viewpoint. I mean, they are a large ass corporation, with a lengthy history of doing things right, well and consistently. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Expectations are very subjective.

I'm all for eeking out value from devices too!🤣

This is sacrilege but I think LT gets some of his best tones in his Boss videos :bag
I wish I could agree, but I don't. The amps still sounds like eq'ed dist pedals running direct to me, there's something "plasticky" artificial about the tone that doesn't agree with me.

For future threads, anyone complaining about no MIDI on a sub 400$, clearly beginner oriented, clearly not pro stage oriented unit, will get banned from this dimension.
I'll allow it for now, but consider yourselves warned.

F.w.i.w ... I am sadly very far from a beginner :) ..... Walrus ACS1 MK1 or MK2 6 x Amp Pedal + extras ..... full Midi Spec for all features and settings and increments for everything included via Midi TRS Jack ..... and Walrus are probably - quite literally 1,000,000 times smaller in size and financiality than Roland-Boss.

I rest my case Your Honor !

My take on this is just... Hey, what did you all expect? It's a unit that brings nothing new to the show. There are tons of units in that form factor. Exactly, What was the expectations here?

Some up there saying to add a raspberry Pi or a midi usb host... Really? Again the same debate? After adding all that stuff, you're being more expensive than a GX-100, and with a mess of cables and PSUs, and bigger too.

It is what it is. A Nux MG-30, Valeton GP-200JR, Mooer GE200 (or any Flamma sibling), Ampero whatever, Zoom G6 or G2X Four, Sonicakes Matriboxes or whatever you could think of... But from Boss.

It's cool? It is. It's limited? Of course! It's your thing? Only you can tell.

There should not be "huge BT latency" if it's executed well. I currently use up to 4 different wireless devices with the Luminite Graviton M1, which itself is connected to the CME WIDI Jack to control my pedalboard, and it all works very much seamlessly.

The M1 also has a USB host port so it could be hooked to the GX-10.

I can't find anything about the Boss BT adapter that says it only works with Boss pedals. Obviously it only works with Boss's modelers and amps, but the adapter itself should connect with any BT MIDI compatible device for controlling the modeler/amp. So e.g my Luminite M1 should be able to control a GX-10 wirelessly with the Boss BT adapter connected to the GX-10.

If you want a similarly priced product that is more universal, the CME WIDI UHost should work, but personally I'd just buy the Boss BT adapter because it's likely going to be more trouble-free and you can use the USB port.

That said, leaving out 1/8" TRS MIDI ports is a bummer.

I'm gonna order one. This is timely for me as I'm looking to build a small live rig. I'll post some video when received.

My guy, the ACS1 costs more than the GX10 on its own. You’re talking apples to blenders here.

Matribox 2 Pro

Full Midi In and Midi Out via TRS .... it has the Hotone Algo's - the manual is even word for word when it comes to the Amp and EFX descriptions the same as the Hotone .... even the Y/T demo's sound identical.

$299 ;)

Not everything is supposed to be the centerpiece of a kitchen sink rig. It’s $400 and it does a ton of shit and it’s from a brand that makes historically solid hardware.
Exactly.

I think it's a cool piece of gear that will complement my FM9 as a "cheap" travel rig. The limitations aren't deal-breakers for me; instead, I see it as the GX-100 feature set and touchscreen in a compact rig with expression pedal and app editing. For about the same price as an ME-90....and significantly less than a lot of other options.

Arrives today!
