Anybody else getting sick of modellers?

Damn, didn't know in Flames made the switch. I saw them only once many years ago and they were still using 5150s. Sounded righteous. Even though the venue they were playing is notorious for sounding like crap

Oh, In Flames was fucking great, they had cabs onstage (he had those crazy one-off Marshalls while I believe Broderick was on 5153s). It was Upon A Burning Body that went amp-less. This was the show where these kids were playing, @JiveTurkey posted a vid of them a week or so before I saw them, kind of hardcore-ish, I can’t even remember their name, but they were like 14 and even they blew away Upon A Burning Body just because they had that oomph coming off the stage.

I am sure I could have gotten my head all up my ass about it, but it was more
important to get my parts recorded and those songs on tape.
I will have a problem playing if either of these are happening-
  1. I can't hear myself well. I need to hear me. I can't do bends to pitch for example, just from muscle memory.
  2. I need the music/vocals I'm trying to harmonize with to be pretty damn close. I will get thrown way off if someone hits a minor chord where a major is supposed to be for example, right when I'm supposed to sing a certain note.
  3. I need a certain amount of compression in my tone, so I won't try to overcompensate. My picking dynamics are not perfectly even, so I rely on distortion/compression to a certain degree.
But beyond those... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only other thing I could blame things on is my own abilities. Perfect tone is way down the list for me, even though I consider the tone I get out of a modeler pretty damn good!
 
I got 99 problems but tones ain’t one….

I think it’s largely a result of two things-

A- Spending a few years with a solid state Peavey XXL and milking it for all it was worth when I couldn’t afford anything better

B- Buying guitars that lend themselves to the tones I go for

One of the more frustrating aspects of not being overly inspired is having whatever tone I want at my fingertips and nothing to do with them.

Imma drop another potentially hot take, but hopefully less of an aggressive drive by than the other night. There’s nothing more self cannibalising and back walking of tech than “anything that’s not a tube amp”

I realize that it’s a constantly advancing and improving industry, but at the same time when making comparisons, no one comes out saying afywr the fact “oh yeah turns out the plexi actually sucks we just didn’t know any better at the time” :idk

New advancements in the digital/emulation world are always “omg this is the best ever we’re there!” Then suddenly here comes the new thing and the old version suddenly pails in comparison :/

Seems like a never ending cycle of self defeat
 
Speaking of impedance curves, I’d like to pose a question here (not trying to be edgy with this post , actually trying to learn)

So I’ve recently learned via this forum that it turns out I don’t enjoy IR/going direct because I have the wrong reactive load. Using a captor when apparently I should have gone with something like the Suhr

But I don’t use any of the captor WoS IRs, don’t like ‘em. I’m using ownhammer IRs which have been the best sounding to me of what I’ve tried. From what I understand “T1” “T2l etc are different power amp impedance curves so I’m not totally clear on what’s going on there, is the reactive load and the whatever IR just stackin impedance curve upon impedance curve? Or….?

See...this just highlights MY current issue with digital modeling solutions...of ALL iterations.

Spending countless hours tweaking, just to spend more time tweaking.... meanwhile my care and want to play had left the building.

Nothing wrong with the tech, especially if it works for you.

I must have spent too much time with analog effects and tube amps....I am spoiled and want to concentrate on music, not all the tech.....again, me, myself....these are my struggles.

It's like me telling people I prefer real butter, as opposed to margarine (🤮).....Just give me the real fatty butter. Period.
