What are we watching now?

Watched Yellowstone and Landman last night....both are great. Only two episodes remain of Yellowstone........View attachment 34096
So watched this last night. Pretty sad, all things considered. The actress with the worst accent this side of Keanu Reeve's "English accent" in Dracula showing some emotion! I won't miss her talking. Ever. At all. Good episode overall and I think they are wrapping it up nicely. I hope they stick to it if they are indeed closing up shop.

Stuff about The Troubles always seem to have troubles... I vaguely knew Steve, one of the Aussies murdered in Belgium (mistaken for Brits) that made some folk here think twice about donating. In 1980-81, when my father (Aussie) was stationed in London we had to check under the car for bombs every morning and evening.

I won't be watching - but I don't have Disney+ for Bluey or Star Wars shows.

Say Nothing. Brilliant series on the IRA and troubles in Northern Ireland from Disney of all people.
We just got a Disney (ugh)/Hulu bundle for BF. I will give this a go as I am not watching 37 Stars Wars spin-off series

Hey, at least you’ll have plenty of DEI and transgender indoctrination material at your disposal!
Pass. I hate that they have Muppets and Simpsons. Pricks.

I don't mind diversity, but if it is used as a criticism shield and I can hear the producers or whomever checking boxes on a clipboard, then I'm not going to care for the show/movie. All the handwringing and pearl clutching will not make me feign interest in it.

Poor Walt. He’s probably rolling on his grave. They ruined everything. Including the Star Wars franchise.

I mean, Walt wasn't a prized peach himself. I have never been much of a Disney fan. There are some things I like, but most Disney related stuff does nothing for me. Disney has gone from being "just okay" to being the poster children for, "let's produce nostalgia bait (and switch), only to check boxes and push bullshit, then when people hate it, we call them racist and say they are the problem." Just look at the social engineering experiment that has become Star Wars. Quite frankly, everything after the first three films is fan fic nonsense.

Just Make An Engaging StoryTM
There's a novel idea.

Meh. Star Wars wasn't that great to begin with. Two good first movies. A middling third movie with a frankly embarrassing Ewok section. And those prequels that were so bad I just don't count them.

It was already ruined.

I think Disney's output is equally a mixed bag.

The Force Awakens- OK.
The Last Jedi - great.
Rise of the Skywalker- dogshit.

Rogue One - a lot of people loved this but I thought it was nostalgia-baiting rubbish that no one would even remember if Vader didn't do the thing.

The Mandolorian - pretty good.

Solo - actually not that bad.

Andor - pretty great.

Boba Fett - got bored, didn't finish.

Obi Wan - Didn't make it through the first episode.

Ashoka - aggressively OK.

The Acolyte - Didn't make it through the first episode.

The Bad Batch and Clone Wars - Haven't watched but highly rated.

I should point out that none of these are as bad as The Christmas Special.

The Force Awakens is basically a remake of Episode IV. All the new movies are nostalgia bait for fans. Then it goes downhill from there. I still can't believe "Somehow, Emperor Palpatine returned" is a thing. Like it absolutely could not just be a new villain, but they had to bring back the Emperor himself?

The overall issue is that a lot of the TV series are completely forgettable, and Andor is the only actually good one. Mandalorian worked fine when it was basically Akira Kurosawa or Clint Eastwood movie in space, but the further it got from that the worse it got.

It's clear that most of the writers (again, Andor excluded) for these shows are terrible when they can't tell an original story in an interesting way, or write characters with more charisma than a wet blanket.

But considering Marvel movies and series suffer from the same issues, it might be just Disney powers that be meddling with all productions where everything has to check the right boxes.

Well, maybe not. The Last Jedi was anti-nostalgia, I felt, and a lot of people hated it (I love it for the same reason). The reason I beleve Rise of the Skywalker was so bad was because they tried to un-do all the things the previous movie set up to try to address criticism, instead of going with what they were given.

The whole 'Somehow Palpatine returned' nonsense could easily be solved by continuing Kylo Ren's trajectory towards being the big bad and making him irredeemable. But instead, Abrahams wanted to re-thread Return of the Jedi and have Ren be the Vader of the trilogy and have his redemption arc of someone who was simply misguided by an evil master. And also somehow make Rey be related to characters of the past instead of a nobody, which I thought was more interesting.

But look, obviously this is all divisive stuff, but I think the one thing everyone can agree on is that the trilogy probably should've been planned better before the first one was even made instead of trying to wing it.

I can agree with all that. I think even for The Last Jedi they got rid of that mechanic lady character who was basically there as an unnecessary romance subplot or something. Rabid SW fans apparently hated her? They will generally hate whatever comes out, and still go see it.

So the filmmakers could do the stories they want to tell instead of pivoting between films. Which would most likely give us better films instead of something watered down in focus groups.

My turn.

First three as a child of that time were great. Other than the Ewoks because George Lucas is dumb. Problem with them now is also because George Lucas is dumb and doesn't know when to STOP SCREWING WITH HIS OWN GD MOVIES. Good luck figuring out where to watch the exact same movie you saw 40+ years ago because that no necked idiot doesn't know when to quit. Good lord!

The next three films had some ok spots (aka Darth Maul and the general story arc of Vader) but they were absolutely ruined by dumb choices like killing off the cool characters instantly and letting Jar Jar run rampant through the entire trilogy. Jesus christ. Combined with the worst acting and dialog really outside of The Room. Hayden Christensen (sp) should have been forcibly retired from acting forever. Alongside Lucas being locked out of every writer's room on earth. Jesus.

The entries after that were so hit an miss it's not funny. I can't remember which is which from that list which is always a good sign :wat I think John Boyega is great and was completely wasted following around Daisy Ripley for however many films they did. Some good nostalgic fan service couldn't make up for the rest of the garbage on display.

I do know I thought Solo was really good (so I'm sure they won't revisit it). I really liked the first two seasons of The Mandolorian. Even when they went cute and added Grogu. I stopped watching the episode with Jack Black and Lizzo (dgafonsp):wat:wat:wat:wat:wat
