(UPDATED for new FW!) EVH amp vs Axe Fx, QC and TMP...

Yeah, or at least as many as are in the FM9. When your competitor has more of your amps in their unit than you do in yours, well, that’s kinda embarrassing.

Especially when the Fender amps they did include in the TMP are mostly '65 black panel amps which all have the same preamp circuit and tone stack - but different power sections. It certainly helps it seem like there's more amps included. Copy and paste half the amp! It's almost cheating

I think they chose the blackfaces based on the popularity of their own reissues, but competing in the modeling world means tweeds, too. Basically, if they focused on 1964 and older models, and as many of them as possible, they’d be in pretty good shape.

Well, they did deliver on their promise to improve those models. However, they are still lacking the clarity and punch of the real amps. It sounds like we’re listening to a signal that has been processed through two IRs. The presence and thump have been neutered.

Edit: come to think of it, the amps sound like they are on a virtual resistive load rather than a reactive load. That lines up with what Fractal Audio found in their testing if I recall correctly.

It's definitely not just the poweramp modeling or impedance curves. Most of the inaccuracies come from the preamp. A poweramp isn't going to magically change the tightness and gain structure of a preamp. However, it could definitely play a part in the overall EQ curve etc
