New Modeler Day: Axe FX III, mark 1, no turbo, used at GC for the price of a brand new HX Floor.

After initial shipping, a late UPS trailer arrival, a UPS rep telling me the package might be considered lost, I received the wrong unit: an Axe FX II XL. Okay I guess, I wanted one of those 12 years ago, but not for this price. Back it went and the actual Axe III arrived a few days later.

It's a little dirty -- like it had been sitting in a shed out in someone's backyard, and I can see why. The person who sold it to GC had the input levels cranked all the way up to the point where every amp model sounded bloated and fuzzy with a few user presets containing routing enough to make you gag. They had uploaded one User IR to EVERY SPACE available :rofl

They probably tried their best, got the worst tones imaginable, and wrote the device off. I'll have to clean it up when I stop playing the damn thing! The amp models are SICK! The reverbs are STELLAR! The Plex Delay is PHENOMINAL! The analog-style delays are...okay -- not as fun as the HX delays -- I like to mess with the knobs to have delays self-oscillate and change pitch, something these delays don't do.

Cabs are cool, but my own IRs tend to not have the influence of a microphone's signature sound, so I use those. I've made a preset with the Class A 30w, Plexi 100w High, and FAS Modern to get close to my favorite Helix presets and I'm about 90% happy with how they turned out. I've wanted to try a FAS product for over 10 years and this is me breaking the cherry.

Some of the jacks in the back seem a little tight when trying to insert a 1/4" cable in al the way. Is this typical?

Congrats on the new modeler!

If it's dirty, I'd open it up and check that the insides are ok, fan is running etc. It's just a few screws on the top plate.

No the jacks generally should not be tight from what I remember.

Make sure you update to the latest firmware and Axe-Edit.

If you like Vox style amps, try the Morgan AC-20 models.

1/4" Jacks are definitely tarnished.

I recommend some foreplay first.
Lube and rigorous penetration seem to be doing the trick :crazy
You should get a hold of GC again with those pics and ask for partial refund lol.
Other than the grime, everything seems to be working well. I think the clean up work was factored into the price.
Also you totally need to get a fc-6 or fc-12 now for it :D it helps a lot!
I'll try my MIDI Captain when I feel like I find a workflow that I like. For now I'm just getting used to the front panel and editor.

Yeah I'd at least give it a try. "I want to keep the thing but it has these issues that could be a big problem along the way".

Those jacks look pretty corroded and replacing them would be a pain in the ass if the ones on the main board are like this. At least those sub boards could be just removed, and new stereo jacks installed.
