IK is already on my “never buy from this company” list
Why not just keep working with Joe Bonamassa to create a product that meets his standards to release?Why wouldn’t they just tap amp DI’s of Bonamassa’s rig and then sweep IR’s of all his cabs and speakers too?
Ha I honestly haven’t knowingly heard a Bonamassa song in my life but he seems the IDEAL person to have done a more complete product with. He’s like a universally known gear connoisseur and having his name attached just adds value and credibility on its own. Guessing they got 95% of the captures right and fudged something small that’s pissed him off. You’d think it would be better in the long run to have him on board.Why not just keep working with Joe Bonamassa to create a product that meets his standards to release?
That would make total sense. You could argue that test signal -> amp -> cab -> mic is more authentic as there is no loadbox or DI in between, but it would make sense to also do a virtual cab and a loadbox or DI signal of the amp.Just to shift back on track (slightly);
IK has their own robot microphone IR capturing technology that can sweep through cabs effortlessly and churn out cab sims with TONS of mic positions and mics.
Why does ToneX not take advantage of this more? can’t they capture basically everything as a DI and capture the cabs as IR’s? Seems like they’re in a unique position to be able to offer all this stuff with lots of detail AND tight integration into the software.

They could even capture poweramps with different loads and have the most modern integrated and slick poweramp+IR modelling solution on the market. They already have everything they need to do it. They basically just churn out average sounding and inflexible ToneX models of odd combinations of gear that either work or don’t.
I suppose they’d rather rub up more of the music industry first.
Amp->DI->Cab is basically going to be indistinguishable from full rig models, with the benefit of moving mics freely. If they were really smart they'd capture all poweramp and cab combinations and adjust internally, although that would require getting a soldering iron out on a lot of rare and expensive old amps. Still, they're a company with the means to develop this stuff and I think them just capturing full rigs is kind of settings the bar low.You could argue that test signal -> amp -> cab -> mic is more authentic as there is no loadbox or DI in between, but it would make sense to also do a virtual cab and a loadbox or DI signal of the amp.
It’s possible he was fine with the quality but changed his mind about the compensation or something - decided to try to tank the product by publicly hammering it’s quality.Why not just keep working with Joe Bonamassa to create a product that meets his standards to release?
The only thing that’s currently certain is Joe Bonamassa wasn’t satisfied with the situation at the time he was posting his displeasure with IKM.It’s possible he was fine with the quality but changed his mind about the compensation or something - decided to try to tank the product by publicly hammering it’s quality.
Given IK’s history it’s easier to assume it’s something borderline ethically questionable from their side though.
People have all kinds of valid gripes against IK and Tonex, but I don’t think sound quality is usually one of them based on my own experience and many others who have been using Tonex for capture and recording.
…and the Sun came up this morning.Yet everyone has an opinion anyway.

I'm going to selfishly put $2.50 down on "they realized the input levels were way off, due to no freaking reference to calibrate them!"I mean even if we dismiss his comments entirely that it was due to his unhappiness with the end results, even if he is in the “wrong” and it falls into:
It still leaves IK selling a pack of his amps while he is unhappy with the situation. Doesn’t seem like the type of situation you would want to profit from.
- He signed a contract that gave ownership of the captures to IK regardless of his future involvement
- He had a dispute over compensation after the fact
A girl can only dream…I'm going to selfishly put $2.50 down on "they realized the input levels were way off, due to no freaking reference to calibrate them!"
