Starting to get the Klon thing?

This guy has been sitting in a closet mostly untouched since purchasing it 2 years ago. The band is all Helix, not super practical to fold in this ridiculous enclosure.

I’ve pulled the Centura out a few times briefly. I liked what it did with a tele through the Princeton Reverb but I didn’t see god or have to change my pants or anything. Just a nice subtle compression, a little bump in the mids and nice top end. In the closet it went.

Tonight I was able to try it in a different context and it really sounded great.

I’m using your typical edge of breakup Superlead thing here and the Centura provides a boost that combines naturally with the amp. Good volume knob cleanup. I think there’s some nice buffering happening in bypass too but I’m not sure my ears aren’t playing tricks on me.

I do have the amps bright cap bypassed but the Centura is still usable with the bright cap engaged…just very gainy.

I think this one is staying on the board for a bit.

Yeah, it tightens up the bass, and the midrange boost is pretty broad and feels good into distortion. If you like the IDEA of a TS-9 but find them too small/ compressed sounding in practice, I think a Klon is a great choice.

I don't like them on their own into a clean sound.

When I built my first Klone, I thought “oh, I get it now”. There really is something about it. Je ne sais quoi is too easy to mention but, yeah, it fits. I generally don’t use a drive in front of my amp anymore but when I do it’s a Klone.

They also stack really well. An EP Booster or SHO after it is really meaty.

Agreed! It seems a bit less colored than the TS but does some of the same things. But because it's less compressed it doesn't seem to work as well with a totally clean amp. I've tried a few and I like the Tumnus as it's a little fatter.

I'm in the same boat. I thought my RYRA Klone sounded fine. So into the draw-full-of-pedals it went. I just always go back to an SD-1 (now SD-1W) for the pushed Marshall thing. What am I missing??? What is is offering over the SD-1?

I have been curious about the Klon for a good while. I got a really good deal on a PRS Horsemeat in December. From my understanding that is a Klon circuit with some modifications. I am honestly amazed at how good that pedal is. It has a voice control that allows you to adjust the midrange of it. I think it may have a little more gain than the Klon as well but don't know for sure since I don't have a Klon. I have a clone of the Klon in the middle of the build process. I need to get back to that and finish it up, along with the other three that are in process...

It's a sound alike in some ways but a really different circuit.

I haven't been able to find a schematic on it. I looked because I was curious as to what the circuit is. I found a PCB for it but no schematic on the site.

Yeah I've got the schematic and the pcb but promised I wouldn't share it. I'll get round to building eventually.

I wonder why they are keeping such a tight grip on it? The build sheet wasn't on the site either so I wouldn't know what parts to order. I was assuming that they were sending that out with the PCB but don't know for sure.

The parts are printed on the pcb silkscreen so you can build it without a build doc but I'll send you a pm with the parts list when I get home so you can check them out.

This is spot on with what I’ve experienced migrating from a Green Rhino which is actually still sitting on the amp in that picture. The GR is a fantastic TS clone but the Klone is much more open and frankly seems tailor made for how I’m using it in that rig.

It took too many tries but once I found one that suited me I finally got the whole Klon thing. Wasn’t expensive either

I’ve only got experience with the Fractal model of it and initially blew it off as a hype thing, until I used it. Now I use it as my primary boost for everything, whether it’s high gain or edge of breakup. It’s just light enough to do what I want and I can certainly see why it’s an always-on pedal for some.

Maxon OD808 > TS9.

Which pretty sums up my board right now with dirt. Fredric Zombie Klone into OD808 into Orange Getaway Driver into Orange Kongpressor. Happy sounds spiral outwards etc.

I wish I had a different Klon variant beyond this Sugar Drive mini. I like what Klon(es) do to wound up amps \m/

I like the Tumnus and lots of used ones out there, but the Nux Horseman is cool too. It would also be fun to throw a JHS Notaklon together.
