Okay there's a difference between advertising and shilling:
- Shilling is when you promote a company's products as if you are an independent consumer, but you have a secret affiliation with the company.
- Making paid advertisements or demo videos as properly disclosed is just advertising.
I don't think that either Rob Chapman or Rabea have been guilty of shilling. I doubt that is too common nowadays now that there are disclosure laws in place.
I think what really bugs me now is the distinction between artists and influencers/content creators. Decades ago, we would chase down gear that was used by our favorite artists because we loved the music and wanted those same sounds. Nowadays, we just see dozens of basically short infomercials for a product released by people who don't actually create any music. They're basically professional advertisers.
It's kind of like if you were a big fan of Billy Mays and got super excited for every commercial he did and would rush out to buy whatever product he advertised. That makes zero fucking sense.
Anyways, I cut Rabea slack because he actually releases music every now and again. The collab he did with Plini "Giving 6", which was kind of an ad for NDSP, at least was a really good song (with a killer drum sound too). And you can actually find it on Spotify and listen to it. The Totemist is also really good.
