Marshall Amps

My 8100 is a whole other being than my Jubilee.
Jubilee to me is a sound that I just think other amps do better. I don’t mind them but I’d also reach for other Marshalls in basically any situation a Jube might work. They’re just sort of middle of the road to me, and I don’t think any albums come to mind where I think “holy shit that jubilee sounds incredible”. 8100 on the other hard sounds like nothing else. Not saying that’s always a good thing, but nothing really does what an 8100 does and that makes it more appealing. So many bands wouldn’t sound the way they do/did if they’d have used something else. I think anywhere a Jubilee was used, it could have been any number of amps and it wouldn’t have made a difference.

Agree the 8100 is its own thing.

I'll get my Jubilee out of storage and reamp with your DI. For me, it leaves my JCM900 in the dust and adds more than my 79 2204. I do generally boost the Jubilee but will not for the reamp.

I’ve owned all 3 of these amps, as well as a 8100 and 8200. Still have the 79 2204, still have the valvestates. 4100 is kind of cool for the pop/skate punk thing of the 90’s/early 2000’s but it’s not really a tone that catches my ear at all, it’s more just functional. I had an 80’s 50W jubilee too but received a good offer for it and let it go about a year ago. Was fine but I was quite indifferent to it compared to other Marshalls.

A 2203 or 2204 with a boost covers so much ground that even some of the better Marshalls that came out since don’t really offer much.

As I said, I really can’t think of too many albums with Jubilee’s on them. I’m sure they’re out there but they aren’t really distinctive or ear catching to me.

Yeah, have no idea on albums but I'm referring to personal experience. Not sure if Slash used them?

In reference to all the amps I have I rate the Jubilee pretty high.

Mine is a reissue. The first one I played was an original 2x12 combo. It struck something in me that I couldn't shake. The reissue is similar but not quite as delicious. Very close though.

As a primarily Mesa player, I always wanted to have a Marshall in my collection but since it's not a primary sound of mine, I never wanted to spend $2500-$3500 for a 2203. So last year I picked this up and have been really impressed. This amp does every Marshall sound I want, and I'm a total tone snob so I was really pleasantly surprised with what this DSL100HR can do.

I remember seeing Wayne Static using the 8100 on stage right when WDT came out, they were second stage at Ozzfest and KILLED, 1999 IIRC. They sounded awesome.

White Zombie’s Astrocreep album was the 8100 and a triple rectifier…really cool sounds all over that album.

The dry percussive thing the 8100 does IMO takes on another dimension when you pair it with something like a recto or maybe even 5150.

The DSLs are the unsung hero of Marshalls lineup. They sound great, and for whatever reason nobody cares.

I think a 50w head would honestly be a game changer. No idea why they haven’t done it. Such a weird gap between a 40w combo and a 100w head.

Agreed. This amp has some weird features too. The digital reverb is almost non-audible, the tone shift button to scoop the mids kills the tone, and the red channel is kinda unruly gain that works but isn't ideal. The MIDI is implemented in the oddest way possible too with fixed values for PC messages.

That green channel though, boosted with an SD1, it's just the thing. The classic 800 sound and vibe.

I share the same gripe about that red channel. Honestly confused about how Marshall continues to miss the boat there. Let’s be real, most who are playing with those gain levels aren’t using Marshall.

That 3rd channel should be another crunch channel and then the 4th should be the crunch with another 12ax7 switched in. Done.

I always liked the Red Channel 2 gain set at about 2 - 3 and then hit with a SD-1 with minimal gain, volume around 3 o clock and tone to taste. At least on the 2000s. Not sure how well that translates to the HR amps. I’d love to have a DSL back in the fold.

The one DSL I owned was great but I definitely remember the discrepancy between the green and red channels. Definitely not something you could run as a multichannel amp in a way that felt natural going from one channel to the other. If I wanted another Marshall; it would be a DSL because I am too cheap to spring for one of the JCM sterilization machines :ROFLMAO:

Yup that's my take on it too. I also think the the tonestack on the dsl40 at least is after the effects loop. So if you want to run a modeller into the effects return then it will also run through the amps tone stack.

I am kind of blown away that they still make a 900 and it is $3k in the States. Who would ever buy
one at that price considering the other options when you are dropping that kind of coin on an amp.

That's just crazy!

Meanwhile where I live... And this is with 25% Swedish VAT, so to make it really comparable, it's actually €1140,22~
Marshall US distributor is smoking something heavy...

Thing with da Jewbs is if you want the all out aggressive tone they offer you need to crank the Master to about 6 and then make a Dr. appointment to fix yer hearing.

Can you give us more info on why the Jub is so much better than my 2203 JMP? My buddy just got one for $1,400 - a 100w not the studio series I know Lifeson has a sig model based on it and Bonamassa has one in every multi amp rig. Just curious

My buddy says get a 2006 era JCM 2000 DSL because the orange mode is almost 2203 good. He also said Red mode is meh -but can it be used for solos? More gain and volume? Is it voiced super different or what's the scoop with it?

Not better, just different. I suppose it may depend on the year of the 2203. There are some that are less desirable.

I will say the Jubilee is more versatile though.

Both channels are really good but it’s trying to go for a higher gain sound and it’s fine, but I like the green channel so much more. The green channel with a SD1 in front is exactly that Marshall hotrodded 2203 sound I’m looking for.

What's the diff from the H versus the DSL 100 non H in the era that does not have the bias drift?

Mine is a 1979 JMP with a higher plate voltage which is what makes them sound better per Dave Friedman. He said some 2204's can be squishy due to a lower plat voltage
