Marshall Amps

Its funny that this is even a conversation. I use “blah, blah hockenberry” because it does Marshall better than Marshall and is more reliable.
Oh hogwash, none of them do and they are only reliable when being carried from the left side of the living room to the right.

Want it to sound like a 70s jmp…get a 79s jmp.
Metropoulos gets a pass. Him only !

I understood you perfectly, Ed. I also agree tenfold! :beer

Had a few Marshalls and inspired-by-Marshall clones, but this is the last one for me.

Badge says its a M1987, but I've been told that's "not right". Its either a late '79 or an early '80 JMP 50W, had the original blackbacks and an unmolested circuit.

I bought this amp from a friend who lives in Hawaii. Got a bro deal and figured worse case scenario, I could probably flip it and make some money if I didn't like it. We had some issues during shipping...

Worse case scenario hadn't even considered this damage. Took some coin to get it fixed, switched it to EL34s and when I got it back, it sounded like poop thru the reconed blackbacks. Awesome. In a last ditch effort to like it, I pulled the head from the beautiful fawn combo cab, had a headshell made for it, and I'm glad I did. It sounds glorious, like a tweed for bigger rooms. Pair it up with a 2x10 with greenbacks or a 2x12 with neo creambacks if I need some thump.

It's the Dunlop Crybaby Mini with a few JHS mods - LED, Q and boost control knobs, maybe some component swaps inside (don't know for sure).

I'm not a fan of it being so little (got big feet, it just feels weird), but it's the best sounding wah I've got, and I have some nice ones - vintage Crybaby, vintage Vox, CAE, etc. It's well used, there's hardly any "tread" left on top.

Not an expert in Marshall history, but I’m pretty sure that’s an early 2203. I think they carried the JMP badge until the JCM800 series happened, bringing the 2203 along too. Awesome amps.

A 1987 would have been a 4 hole model, different circuit, different vibe. Also cool.

2204 if 50w. Definitely not an 1987 model. :)

I was also thinking it might be a 50 watter, def 2204.

pointer knobs and serial number on front panel means it’s after 1979
Love the knowledge base here, thanks guys. Definitely an identity crisis before you even pop the hood, lol. Just so you know I'm not crazy:

It's not the only piece of gear I've got that was mis-named by the factory. The orange label in the F hole of my ES-339 says it's a 335 - good ole Gibson QC. I like to think it is, and I'm actually 7 feet tall!

I feel like those monster gain levels were an over correction from years of “Marshalls don’t have enough gain” back in the late 80s through the 90s.

I’ll never forget my buddies disappointment plugging in his brand new JCM900 dual reverb half stack and having to fish his grunge pedal out of the closet because we couldn’t get what we were expecting from the amp. I think it lasted 6 months before he sold it and bought a 5150.
The 900’s are great punk rock amps.
The preferred Marshall of Noel Gallagher,
-so there must be enough gain, 😗
