Marshall Amps

Ya gotta wonder the pressure these guys end up putting themselves under to keep the new content flow going.
How many high gain amp demos can you do where you have to look all fresh and excited the entire time.

- GOD, I love this new amp by XXXX.
- Today, let's compare XXX vs XXXX.
- XXXX: Amps I'll never sell.
- Should I sell XXXX?
- Today, let's blend XXXX with XXX in a mix.
etc.

Wonder how long it takes before it starts becoming a chore to keep your channel in high rotation month after month.
And some of the top channels have been on the air for a number of years now!

Maybe best not to take every single video as some sort of set in stone gospel that requires rebuttal?
It's the Metallica problem. If you want to play something different (Metallica during Black album/Load/Reload) you get called a sellout, has-been, lost your way etc. If you play the same thing you are known for, you get called out for doing the same thing over and over. No way to win.

Similarly YouTubers can end up painting themselves in the corner if they are "that guy who tries out high gain amps" for example. If they want to do something different they risk alienating their viewers. At the same time YT pushes them to make content constantly or they risk not showing up in suggestions so can't grow their channel. That can mean the content quality suffers if you can't think of interesting stuff to do every week.

Of the ones I owned 72 1959
Followed by Soldano modded 2203

Of the ones I didn’t own. Bob Marleys late 60s small box 1987
And Ray Gomez early 1959T

Also prefer Jubes to 800s

What's your favorite crunch?
JTM45, Plexi, JCM800, Jubilee...
Weird post 1990 Marshalls?
Any interesting mods?
Did your amp explode?
Is it fucking loud as hell?
Hell yeah! I like all a those listed above. Right now I'm playing a lot through a Silver Jubilee combo.

For all my amp whoring over the years have very little Marshall experience

A while back I had a DSL401 combo that literally exploded during the first hour of practice. Lucked out and the guy off Craigslist took it back and refunded me (literally within 24hr period)

Recently had a JVM 210H and it was a bad motherfucker but traded it for a 5153 head and cab and can’t say I’m sad about that decision

Definitely a bit runt curious as well as Ceriatone hot rod models

That's probably one of the worst amps Marshall has ever made when it comes to reliability. It would overheat and develop cold solder joints, on top of the bias drift issues that plagued the original JCM2000 range.

Throw in preamp PCBs that feel more like bouncy castles when swapping preamp tubes and you have a nice recipe for disaster because Marshall didn't want to spend a bit more on more standoffs for the boards.

Besides the usual 2203, The OG JVM and the Gen 1 Valvestates are still the coolest Marshalls around in my opinion. Really sucks the 8100/8200 are made of paper mache because I'd love to own one again without it breaking or catching fire lol

Yeah I was always told if you want a JCM2000, you get the later ones or the anniversary. You also were able to buy replacement late-revision boards for the DSL online but apparently they're all sold out now.

...or just get the new vietnam DSL100 lol.

Yeah found all this out after the fact lol

Went in thinking I was going to get a better built/more reliable one since it was UK built… nope

Same here! I tried to buy one but the bias was not working right. There is a mod board that takes the negative supply off the main board but you have to drill four holes on the main board and that just seemed like a lot of trouble for a fix that might not work, bummer that Marshall stopped making the replacement boards but at the same time that was a $220+ USD just for the replacement plus installing fees if you did not do it yourself.

Late entry to the thread.

I don't have an actual Marshall, but I built something reminiscent of a Ceriatone Plexi All Access. I heard a lot of of Bass Spec amps early on in my guitar playing that shaped my idea of crunch tones.

I was going to buy a Bass Spec 1986 clone kit, but wanted some Lead Spec 1987 tones just in case. I didn't feel comfortable hacking up faceplates and a chassis with a hand drill and a unibit. I did the chassis layout in CAD and incorporated as many components mods as I could find on the Plexi Palace and Metro Amp forums. What I ended up with is a mutt amp with zero Plexi cosmetics and a lot of sentimental value.

It can set it up to be straight up 1986 Spec for cleans and broken up tones. Flipping 6 or so switches brings it into Lead Spec. I did some strange stuff like 3 way bright cap switches on both channels and mixer cap switches on both channels. Early on, I mainly played the amp configured for Lead Spec with no bright cap.

The amp has evolved as my tastes have changed. I got rid of the 500pF bright cap on the Vol 1 switch for a 4700pF bright cap to get a more aggressive crunch sound. I prefer the Lead Spec Plexi sound versus the latter JCM800 sound, based on my experiences in modeling. I do want to get into the Jose-modded Marshall sound, and will probably eventually get a Ceriatone to do so.

This is so cool! I would love to see pictures from inside the amp.
