Time to shoot an IR of an IR :sofa:guiness

So far I've had a laugh every time I read this forum. :beer

I like the VST sims. I have ML Sound Labs Mikko, Two Notes WOS w/ the Friedman and Big Hairy cabs, Overloud TH-U Super Cabinet, and Amplitube max. Any one of them could beat the other out on different days.

I totally forgot about Mikko, I have it too but everytime there was a major Windows update I had to reach out to them to reactivate me...

It might be nit picking, but Two-Notes aren't sims.

Theyre certainly presented that way, but they're captures of real cabs, just with a more advanced process than a typical IR.

It probably hinges on what's meant by "sim" as well.

Two Notes stuff is just IRs with a graphic UI to select/interpolate between them.

Basically yep.

Although I think they have a process for producing captures for dynamic IRs that isn't the typical process for static IRs.

In any case though, not a sim, as you point out 👍

Wait, fyi all the ones PatF listed are just IRs with a UI, not just Two Notes.

You're right. They are IR's proprietary to that plugin.

FAKA my Mikko has never acted up. I've had it three years now.

About a week ago I bought the Audio Assault AIR Rack IR loader for 8 bucks. It is cool. You can make your own IR's with it. It has an impedance control that sounded pretty good.

Fair enough, I'm not familiar with the others. I Just noted that TN was included on the list of tools being called a sim.

Again, depends on what you mean by sim, But I don't tend to call Captures of physical items sims.

I have a ridiculous number of them, but ever since I tried York the rest have been collecting proverbial dust.

My go-to IRs in order (all York):

VX15 112 Blue
YORK 212 M65 Cream
MTCH 212 ESD-V2
MES 212 V30
YORK 212 DV77

Unless I’m going for higher gain I use the VX15 112 Blue about 90% of the time. It just sounds right to me for everything

I need a Miles Davis IR. Top 5 All Time Favourite Musician. Right behind Herb Alpert. ;)

Only one of those things is true.

My taste in IR’s vary. That why I like the Nux solid studio. Load a hundred IR’s or so and choose one on the fly. Tweak mic position, presence and drive and go. For the pedal only approach anyway.

I pretty much gave up on IRs a while back
:sofa
Been a huge York fan… but… idk… I kinda felt it was easier to just load up an amp and cab in my stomp and not think about “if” it sounds like an real equivalent amp and cab, and just think about “if” it sounds good or not…

Epiphany…

Conclusion is that I feel better just doing what sounds good instead of not knowing how it should sound according to a name on a file.

I’m better of this way. Saves some time and I can play guitar instead of scrolling through files and not knowing what they actually mean.

I suppose I understand everyone that has a bunch of real cabs and want a good and reliable comparable digital version of that inside their modellers. IRs can be great. They can also be completely pointless depending on what oneself consider being a priority.

I think the biggest problem when demoing IRs is lack of reference (other recorded instruments).
I assume most people go through IRs and choose what sound acceptable through their speakers without any other recorded reference like Drums, Bass, Vocals, Synths, etc.
Even a simple dry drum track on Youtube will help with choosing the better sounding IRs.

Anyone tried and liked ML Sound Lab IRs?
I did when he started out, with that hyped ”the best IR in the world” IR file. Then he started to release proper packs. I did use a few in the begining. The Mega OS and some others.

If i recall, my thoughts were that they had a very strong personality, and that could be heard through all cabs. A sonic signature perhaps? They didn’t work in a band setting, might have been user error by me, but compared to HX Cabs I disappeared completely in the mix regardless of amp settings, compared to being “being in front” smack in the middle of the mix with HX cabs.

Today.. idk.. but I strongly felt that way a couple of years ago, and changing to the OH Revolution series was a massive improvement to my ears. I still had the “scooped signature” haunting me from OH, so when York came around I felt that was the best option being generally really good balanced across all packs.

I think if you are curious, try a sample if he has that kind of offers.

ML used to be my favorite IR producer. Some of his Fractal-specific offerings are really good, especially the stuff he did with Bulb. Those also came with presets, which really helped to kickstart my understanding of digital modeling. His "next-gen" IRs (the WAV files he hosts and sells himself) are not great, in my opinion. I have an OH and/or YA comparison the ML packs I own, and I will go with YA 9/10 times and OH 1/10 times (for the stuff that's unique to them like the DZL and EMP cabs).

As far as variety is concerned, ML doesn't give you more than a half-dozen mixes, and more often than not, I ended up not liking any of them. I get a smaller curation may be preferred over a massive repository (looking at you, OH), but I guess my ear just doesn't jive with ML's. My ML IRs are simply collecting digital dust on the digital bookshelf.

Here's what I have of ML's that I also have from YA and/or OH:
  • Friedman 4x12 - ML, OH, YA
  • Bogner 4x12 - ML, YA
  • Mesa OS 4x12 - ML, OH, YA
  • Zila 4x12 - ML, OH
