Fractal Talk

MIDI with an Axe can't be all that bad?

Asking for a friend with a MIDI Cap'n and solid MIDI chops.

MIDI doesn't sound so bad?

Ideally I'd have a rack processor and a TC BAM on top of my 2x12, and my MIDI Cap'n wirelessly controlling said rack processor from afar.

I'm not gigging or even jamming with anyone outside of my home and family so I can't justify all of this, but a man can dream.
It's all down to what you want to control, how you want to control it, how capable your controller is and how capable you are.

Preset changes - dead simple, unless you need to go beyond the bank you're in.

Scene changes - not too hard BUT your midi controller must allow defining both CC# and CC data value. Also, if your controller switches use LEDs or something to track states, you really want the ability to make switch groups that are mutually exclusive or you'll have a hard time knowing which is active.

Channel changes - same as Scene changes

IA (Instant Access) switches - simple

Continuous Controllers - simple

Tap Tempo - simple

Tuner display - turning the on-unit Tuner on is not hard. To display the tuner on your controller requires the controller to support Fractal sysex.

That being said, if you're not controlling any additional midi stuff, the FCs are so nice. But not cheap...

I really feel that a great JCM800 could be the desert island amp. You can do just about anything you want with it, given the right boosts. So I’m excited to see how this turns out compared to the current Brit 800.

I believe you are correct. :beer

I love some of my channel switchers, but the 1985 2204 I had for years was the single
best amp I have ever owned. It was also a Canadian issue. I still look for it out in the wild. :(

Around the 5 minute mark, Dave does a little bashing of Fractal's "one-dimensional" tone. I disagree 💯

I take Dave with a grain of salt when it comes to his opinions on "modelling" the Fractal. :knit

Besides, the Marshalls in the Fractal sound better than Friedman's own BE amps, which
tend to be less open, more compressed, and smoother than actual Marshalls. In my
experience.

Seems like he doesn't know what he doesn't know that he doesn't know. The dude says
the Helix Marshalls are "pretty good" but bags on the Fractals. Dave comes off as clueless,
and makes me wonder how much time he has even had these things in his hands. :facepalm

Friedman shilling for Neural!!!

SHHHHHHHIIIILLLLLL !!!!!

He specifies the Neural with the right capture, then says Helix is good to go with just the modeling. Shots fired, I guess? I love models on all of those platforms, and I do not hear a "cocked wah" tonality on Fractal models at all.

But he's selling a product, and poop-talking is his preferred method.

Because an amp designer/manufacturer is going to praise a product that seeks to replace their products. 😂

One of the best things about the Fractal Marshalls is their dynamic responsiveness and clean up
capabilities---from the Superleads to the Plexis to the 800s to the JVMs. It's amazing.

I used to agree with some of Dave's assumptions---until I had more direct experience with the subject
at hand. Then I adjusted my opinions based on experience. Dave just sounds uninformed at this point.

Not to mention that the Fractal modelling is a moving target. Has Dave played with it recently?

I love the FAS modelling now, but 2 years ago I was thinking that it had just a tiny bit further to go in order to satisfy what I was looking for, and then of course it crossed that line! So much has changed and always in the right direction.
