Well I've got a patch that I've been playing the most recently - It's a High Powered Tweed Twin on one side and Super Reverb on the other.

(Hello Mermen!)

I made a backup copy and reset the amp blocks and then switched between the two versions.

I really prefer the new firmware version. High end is sweet, maybe smoother (not harsh); clear and open. The rest is hard to put a finger on...

🤔 richer and fuller and more nuanced in terms of dynamics perhaps?

Confirmation bias be damned!

I didn't expect it, but there's a noticeable difference.

I played around with a couple of other patches and all of them needed to be preset levelled, BTW.

After making a little clip to compare and then messing with all the settings I realized I'm the last person in the world to make these kind of comparisons. I think I've been playing through an amp too much lately to be able to tell anything of note. That said, after tweaking my JCM800 and Mark IV presets, I did say to myself, "Goddamn this thing sounds great", I thought I was getting a little "Uhhh I really love amps again" but nah.

Good timing I suppose, I was making pretty big changes to all my presets anyway on account of the not-so-new monitors. Another reason why it's pointless for me to compare, my ears are still hearing things a bit differently.

I don't think anyone is going to have to do a ton of tweaking to get back to where they were or improve on where they were. I'd imagine anyone using power amp distortion for anything will have the majority of tweaking to do.

Now we just need to hear those clips 😀

Thanks, JD! You da man. Hope life has been good and decent for you guys!! :beer

It definitely wouldn’t serve as a good comparison. It was a “grab a guitar and record this idea quick’ thing that is so sloppy it’d distract from any tonal observations.

Edit- after listening to the clips and matching the gain (C3 was lower in volume) in Logic, you can hear some difference in there for sure. I may have had my self-critique hat on a little too tight.

The first 10 seconds are Cygnus 2, when the riff starts over at 0:10 it's C3, then back to C2 when it repeats a 3rd time. Decent monitors are going to be needed to hear the detail and I don't want to pollute the waters too much, but I'd pay attention to the palm mutes. This is not a DI, I played it at different times.

Once I heard them in that order I realized I may have been a bit too dismissive about C3 initially, but there's definitely something in there that I've had trouble getting on a recording before. I'm a little more anxious to go play the Mark's and 5150's now.

Oh, it's a boosted JCM800, I had the amp Gain at 6.66 and the Master somewhere around 6-7 w/ an SD-1 boosting it. I've tweaked it since then.
