Fractal Talk

I'm a big fan of the larger scribble strips. Defo would want the MKII over the MKI. Unless the MKI was discounted a fair bit, then I might be up for that.

I have the OG FM9 standard and the new MKII turbo is definitely tempting. If I hadn’t just bought another guitar I’d be thinking about maneuvering the upgrade.

I got on the waitlist a few days ago but if it's only the scribble strips (which I think is almost certainly the case) I probably won't bother.

They're really coming up with a new model that has nothing to add but the somewhat larger scribble strip displays? That's pretty weird I think.

Edit: Otoh, thinking about it, in case a lot of users are complaining (or generally wishing for larger scribble strips), it's probably pretty smart, simply because it shouldn't cause much (if any) development costs and still sell some more units than without that move.

As long as you don't play live much (in that case the larger displays and additional CPU juice might be a nice thing), I don't think there's too many reasons in getting this over the old version. It's quite likely they would be supported as long, too.

Not calling you out specifically, Sascha, just kinda noting how absurd things are getting at this point in the discussion of practicality and what these units are already capable of, sans 11% more horsepower or a few extra centimeters of scribble strips.

I think the entire guitar playing world would be quite hard pressed to find the OG FM9 limiting in any way for live use. Maybe if The Edge or someone who uses a rig like that were going for nothing but kitchen sink presets, but for consideration, I've recreated about 90% of this rig into an FM9 and could switch between Scenes, pre-gapless, without gap issues.

Yeah, but that's evolving technology for you. We always want more, regardless whether we need it.
And at the same time we still always try to tell ourselves that these are so great times to be a guitarist and how we possibly never need anything else again.

And fwiw, just for the record, while you explicitely stated this was not directed at me, I'm possibly in the rather conservative camp anyway. I'll be using a GT-10 for an upcoming gig (for good reasons, and it's somewhat enhanced by an AMT Pangaea IR loader), my actual computer is from 2010 (yeah, will get a new one this year) and my overall expenditure for musical gear in 2023 was exactly €100 (for a second hand BE-OD). So I'm not exactly wellknown for hopping onto each new trend.

Simple is as simple does lol

Even though I have many signal chain options
I’m using mostly pretty simplistic patches
The FM3 I have is totally sufficient for my needs

Not weird at all, when you consider that all the other devices now use these strips and the entire product range is componentized to use all the same parts where possible to keep costs down. It was not only inevitable, but it was necessary.

Obviously the larger displays are better, but the original ones are totally fine
I have the OG FM9 and from day one the only thing I've ever disliked about it was the scribble strips: My vision isn't what it used to be and these are at the limits of being usable for me. Coming from Helix, they were a major disappointment. I've long wished they made better use of the pixels available on the scribble strips, because every little bit helps.

Still I dearly love my FM9 and I don't gig with it so the scribbles aren't holding me back in any way.
