What’s going on with Marshall??

For reference, my 4x10 is about 10 cm narrower than the JVM410 head. It's not much, but enough to make it look a bit odd on top of it.

4x10s are a classic case of "nobody famous used them, so they're not popular." The Super Reverb and Bassman, as used by SRV and others, remain basically the few somewhat popular 4x10s.

Yes, compared to many other amps there's plenty of space, and I can bet that amp could be designed to fit into even less. They just didn't need to do it when they knew it was going into this big box form factor.

If they ever make a successor, I'd love to have it be a bit smaller and lighter.
It’s already the biggest chassis Marshall have ever used, they had to make it deeper because their standard size won’t fit the amp in. As I’ve said before, I don’t think any of the numbers would make sense for Marshall to put another JVM amp into production, especially so if it requires totally different chassis and headcabs to make it work. The demand would be so small for a stripped down JVM that I really can’t see the point, it’s a miracle JVM’s are still in production in all honesty.

I also think it’s unlikely Marshall would deviate too much from their current sizes, it’s just more economical to keep things consistent. All their full fat heads have kept similar sizes for years, and I think they want to preserve the general look for a half stack and full stack.

This BS mentality about 100 watt big box amps being real men’s amps and 20 watt small box amps being “pipsqueeks” is the reason the amp industry and brands like Marshall are dying.

“Just use a 4x12” and “just play louder” are highly style dependent (believe it or not, not every guitarist plays metal), and a good mantra if you want to find yourself unemployed as a working musician.

Judging by our favorite other forum, there is plenty of BS mentality going the other way too, "big amps are dead", "how could you POSSIBLY ever need more than 5w if mic'ed", etc etc. :rofl

Yup. People peopling and projecting their ill-fated absolutes onto a diverse world where
one size never truly fits all.

This... Back in the day around 2001 I was in a band that did reasonably well, so I got to play some HUGE stages. Used my 50w '68 plexi for the larger stages and happily used a Deluxe Reverb or similar smaller amp for smaller venues outside the festival season.

Sometimes I had to compromise with the plexi too, like facing the 4x12" backwards or using a huge rack lid in front of the cab.
Luckily most of the band was on in-ears so they didn't care how loud I was, I love that :)

As long as Ceriatone exists I couldn’t care less about Marshall. It’s been so long since they put out anything that interests me.
Heard good things never tried one. Have you sampled a Headfirst alta? That next to my new JEL 50w is my favorite non Marshall Marshall :rawk

It’s not so much “go louder durrrr” so much ans them already making a range of options that tick most boxes, and covering every single use case is for the specific needs of a few probably doesn’t make much sense. Modern amps like JVM’s have perfectly good master volumes anyway so that’s not an issue. I can understand wanting a smaller size, but it would very quickly turn into something that isn’t a JVM.

Anyway, just found @laxu a new Marshall rig with a matching 1965A 4x10. Immaculate condition, just as it was when it left the factory:

If you wanna make nonce music, then use a Behringer V-Amp. Simples.
