F it. Downloading. Been wanting to try it for a while and even if I hate it, at least I can say I tried.
Vagabond or Samurai to start? (These seem to be the consensus opinion as best newb starting classes)
Out of those, I'd go Samurai because the Uchigatana is more fun and you can find a Longsword basically anywhere.
Personally I play every Souls game with the Wretch/Deprived class because it gets 10 in every stat at level 1, at the expense of no armor and a crappy club for starting gear. This makes early leveling very cheap, and respeccing to a different build works well. Finding some armor and a better weapon is pretty easy.
As for what stats to level.
- Vigor is hugely important and will save you a lot of grief when you don't die to everything all the time.
- Endurance is second because it lets you dodge more, and make more swings.
- Past that, it's best to focus on the stats of the weapons you want to use.
- If you prefer fast weapons, those usually scale with Dexterity.
- For bigger weapons, Strength.
It's best to avoid trying to make a balanced build, and instead focus on only a few stats so you gain the most benefit from the weapons you want to use. Most people find a favorite playstyle and a weapon or two they keep using most of the run until they find something better.
The game does not explain is that stats and armor don't matter anywhere near as much as your weapon level. Upgrading your weapon will make more of a difference than upgrading your stats.
For armor what matters most is a feature called Poise. This value basically determines what will happen if an enemy swings at you the same time as you do. If you have high Poise, you can "hyperarmor" through attacks where you take damage, but your attacks aren't interrupted. This is mainly important for heavier weapons with slow swings. Heavier armor has higher poise, but you want to always avoid going above 70% equipment load.
Too high equipment load will cause you to "fat roll" which has less invincibility frames and is very slow. Fast or medium roll is fine. You don't have to roll through everything...some attacks can be avoided by simply moving sideways around an enemy, which lets you regain stamina and hit back faster.
Also know that jumping attacks are very powerful in this game, they are a good opener for many weapons.
If you feel stuck, look at your map and zoom in. There are plenty of places of interest highlighted in Limgrave that could hold treasure that will give you an edge.
PS. Don't try to fight the golden knight on horseback other than to try it out. It's a tough bastard even for veteran Souls players, and is meant to teach you that you don't have to kill everything on sight and it's alright to run away from a fight or avoid it altogether.
