Video Games

F it. Downloading. Been wanting to try it for a while and even if I hate it, at least I can say I tried. :ROFLMAO:

Vagabond or Samurai to start? (These seem to be the consensus opinion as best newb starting classes)
I like Vagabond, but both are good choices. It just determines the starting armor/weapons and stat allocation. All of that will change eventually anyway when you acquire new armor/weapons and the stats will change when leveling up.

There are a lot of things the game doesn't explain, which seems to be just for the sake of making it hard. Don't be afraid to look up some tutorials to understand how some of the mechanics and weapon scaling works.

Elden Ring. Im worried about the quick rage quit potential with it. :ROFLMAO:
you should be worried…

You will feel all sorts of anger and rage. You will use bad words even if you’re alone. You will use words that you maybe not would use.
Don’t throw your controller. Please. It won’t help.
The game will give you a direction. You should follow the direction. Then come to us, and we shall embrace you. With open arms. Good luck tarnished.

Oh, the lore and story are worth every minute. Even if it takes thousands of minutes to piece the story/lore together.

I wouldn't get too worried yet. You may feel rage, it's possible, but I didn't feel any rage playing Dark Souls the first time. And I used to be a rager.

Instead I felt that every time I died it was fair. That it was my mistake. And I wasn't going to make that mistake again. This is common among people I talked to.

And even if you do rage remember that you will also feel joy and satisfaction when you down a boss and the adrenaline is surging through you, your heart pounding, and your fist pumping the sky.

Went Vagabond. Played the opening tutorial mission. (It won’t let me past that since the rest is still downloading, the download meter “Ready to Play” indicator apparently means something different to me lol) Im probably going to replay that tutorial tomorrow as I wasn’t too clear on all the various attacks options, particularly using the left and right d-pad options to change what’s in your hands. It at least gave me an idea of the type of combat it will have. Seems like hack n slash melee combat. Gonna dive in tomorrow.

Ok I think I’m going to give Elden Ring a try. My backlog of games is getting way too long but so many good sales right now I can’t resist. Also new to Souls games - though I did try Bloodbourne but couldn’t get out of the initial starting house/mansion thing :ROFLMAO:

This kind of goes along with what I said earlier about the game not explaining a lot of things, but make sure to check your equipment load. I remember that the Vagabond class actually starts you with a heavy load. It took me a little while to even realize that. If you unequip the halberd, it will put you into a med load and you'll be able to dodge roll much faster. I believe to stay within medium, it has to be less than 70% of your max equipment load or something like that. It's tied to the endurance level stat.

Out of those, I'd go Samurai because the Uchigatana is more fun and you can find a Longsword basically anywhere.

Personally I play every Souls game with the Wretch/Deprived class because it gets 10 in every stat at level 1, at the expense of no armor and a crappy club for starting gear. This makes early leveling very cheap, and respeccing to a different build works well. Finding some armor and a better weapon is pretty easy.

As for what stats to level.
  • Vigor is hugely important and will save you a lot of grief when you don't die to everything all the time.
  • Endurance is second because it lets you dodge more, and make more swings.
  • Past that, it's best to focus on the stats of the weapons you want to use.
    • If you prefer fast weapons, those usually scale with Dexterity.
    • For bigger weapons, Strength.
It's best to avoid trying to make a balanced build, and instead focus on only a few stats so you gain the most benefit from the weapons you want to use. Most people find a favorite playstyle and a weapon or two they keep using most of the run until they find something better.

The game does not explain is that stats and armor don't matter anywhere near as much as your weapon level. Upgrading your weapon will make more of a difference than upgrading your stats.

For armor what matters most is a feature called Poise. This value basically determines what will happen if an enemy swings at you the same time as you do. If you have high Poise, you can "hyperarmor" through attacks where you take damage, but your attacks aren't interrupted. This is mainly important for heavier weapons with slow swings. Heavier armor has higher poise, but you want to always avoid going above 70% equipment load.

Too high equipment load will cause you to "fat roll" which has less invincibility frames and is very slow. Fast or medium roll is fine. You don't have to roll through everything...some attacks can be avoided by simply moving sideways around an enemy, which lets you regain stamina and hit back faster.

Also know that jumping attacks are very powerful in this game, they are a good opener for many weapons.

If you feel stuck, look at your map and zoom in. There are plenty of places of interest highlighted in Limgrave that could hold treasure that will give you an edge.

PS. Don't try to fight the golden knight on horseback other than to try it out. It's a tough bastard even for veteran Souls players, and is meant to teach you that you don't have to kill everything on sight and it's alright to run away from a fight or avoid it altogether.

Started Astro Bot on PS5. It's just such a delight of really good game development and whimsy. If you have a PS5 and kids, get them to play this game, they'll love it.

Anyone tried Stalker 2 yet? It’s on the Xbox gamepass. I’m kinda curious because I like DayZ (but don’t like fighting real people :bonk ). Now and then I start a new character in DayZ and solo play my own adventure with the aim of reaching the north left corner. I then settle down in a cabin and live there until someone comes along and kills me, if the wolfs doesn’t eat me up first.

stalker seems to be the inspiration for DayZ so this new Stalker game looks interesting.

I would say melee yes, hack and slash no. Don’t approach this like a typical action game; the rhythm is much different. It’s generally a good idea to think more defensively. As if everything were trying to kill you. Spoiler alert: it is.

No. Balatro.
From my perspective, same indication. :)

I know Belatro is all the rage, but as far as I can tell, you have to start with giving half a damn about poker. Which I just... don't. (Cards are something we used to play because video games didn't exist yet.)

I don't care about poker at all. :idk

Maybe I need to revisit, then. But I'm also not all that into the deck builder genre. And I really disliked Belatro's art style (fonts, etc.) beyond the very promising splash screen. Just seems hard to love overall. And yet everyone does. Which arguably makes for even higher praise?

I don't even like deck building games either, except for Slay the Spire.

Balatro is all about making numbers go brrrrrr. It's just so addictive. Probably a dopamine thing.

I think we talked about Slay the Spire earlier in this thread. I'm a fan, too. I think it's partly down to the fact that it's relatively simple - appeals to my inherent laziness. :D

Either one rips - they each start with some of the best Ashes of War in the game (Square Off and Unsheathe)

Basically just hold L2 then press R2 to win
