The "Going To An Audition" Thread

Band dynamics and problem solving are sometimes my jam

A job that never ends. :beer

Precisely! A guy with range you don't find maybe ever. Loves volume and has a killer PA with
everything mic'd up all the time. Has a vocation and is solid and has resources. About the
same age, so we like a lot of the same music. Lots of plusses.

But the damn list and wanting to "play what the crowd digs"---and me having ZERO say in
even one song right out of the gate is a BIG minus. I am old and secure enough in life to
NOT be someone's bitch.
I would tell him everything you said in the first paragraph, and let him know that you're really interested as long as you have some say in the set list. Give him the chance to meet you in the middle before you walk.

Oh, and the worst thing I heard last night was the Other Dave telling me EVH's original Frankenstrat was actually
a Kramer.

Huh?? Kramer didn't even exist then.

It led to me pushing back right away, and then he doubled down, so I let him have it, and moved on. But really? :facepalm

Many guys just have to control every damn thing. I can't think of anything lamer in a creative endeavor. I've been lucky to have worked with true collaborators in the past. I love playing with people, but it's got to be with people with whom I'm on equal footing. Of course you have to make your own calculations. But the moment some guy tries to get me to follow the leader, they're going to get irrevocable pushback from me. I mean, I could do the same thing, but I don't, because I try to give respect in expectation that it will be reciprocated.

I never care how good someone is at their instrument, if they're not as good at being a person. Take it with a grain of salt, but reading this just made my blood boil.

Wait, that changes everything. :rofl

:hmm He obviously doesn't know that you know your gear. Yet.

Haha! I let him have the "win"---even if it really wasn't a "win."

It makes me wonder since he is the "leader/boss" maybe he doesn't get challenged a lot,
and when he does people just defer to a less than accurate position.... you know, because
authourity and all that. :idk

After reading this update, I’d have to approach this from a hired gun standpoint, he calls the shots, he pays your fees…simply not worth it to not be compensated for putting up with someone’s delusions of grandeur…

Totally!! I've done that a bunch in the past and it is fun---because that is what my expectations were going in. Just learn the
material and make no waves, ask for nothing, and get paid. No stress other than just playing your part.

This was presented differently. Or was it??

I'll definitely be bringing it all up next week. I know I am joining "their/his" band, but I am not going to be the silent
type forever who just goes along to get along. They got that from 2 times.

There is some wisdom to playing the standards, but unless everyone is gonna beta to this dude, everyone should be able to have a couple songs added to the set list so that everyone is, ya know, having fun. lol

Definitely. Seems like common sense to me. Have to throw everyone a bone now and then to make them feel like
they matter. It's just a good management practice.
