The Fuzz Thread

It’s getting real fuzzy in here.

EQD reissued the Fuzz Master General on their reverb shop. Limited run. Trying to tell myself I don’t need it as my Grim Reefer covers all the silicon voice sounds and then some but it doesn’t have the other two voice/clipping (germanium!) options.

It’s crazy that the Dunlop Fuzz Face Minis went from $99 to $150 over the last couple years. They all sound great and solve a couple important problems that typically come with trying to use a FF on a board.

Side note - it’s surprising to me how many FF YouTube demos are just a dude with everything on 11 playing humbuckers. Not how that circuit is intended to be used at all.

If you are new to the FF, here’s a cheat sheet:

  1. Grab something with single coils and 250k volume pots.
  2. Put the FF first in your chain or at least before any buffered pedals.
  3. Forget the bypass switch exists. Leave the pedal on all the time, control the fuzz from your guitar volume knob. You can go from fuzz to a nice dynamic distortion, into OD, and eventually an edge of breakup blackface style clean. It’s kind of a magic trick.

I like to run a klon after a FF, when it's off the buffer brightens the FF up a little bit and cuts some of the excess bass. Turn it on for solos to really goose the front of your amp. Strat>FF>Klon>Marshall = WIN

Yup, you can definitely have fun filtering and/or boosting the FF output. Such a fun, misunderstood circuit.

I had been rocking the silicon 70 fuzz for the last 2 weeks or so but swapped in the germanium 69 fuzz over the weekend. It’s staying there for now. Not because it’s better, just a slightly different flavor.

The mid and contour functions on these pedals add SO MUCH flexibility.
I have a 69 just like yours, great pedal, never tried the 70.

I just finally got around to soldering the board for a super fuzz clone I got from BYOC right before they closed. I want to paint the enclosure before I finish putting it together.

Tremendous! 😁

Is it the BYOC Leeds Fuzz?

Pretty cool that it has the trim! ✅

I gravitate to low-ish gain and a little push by the volume pot on SF variants, with tone (if there's an actual knob) not fully but rather leaning to the "nasty mids" side.

Also, starving the voltage just a little bit makes them nice and saggy (huh?). 😂

Power chords on the A string with a low 4th on the E will sound like they're coming in straight from hell. 🤟

FYI looks like most Fulltone stuff is on sale for a pretty nice discount. I don’t like the guy, but I do like a number of his fuzz and drive pedals.
Did some A/B testing the other day, and the Fulltone Ultimate Octave has managed to get back on my board, replacing the WA Foxy Tone Box and the HBE UFO (I kept rotating these two).

All three are awesome, but the Fulltone's voicing is bolder and more up-front than the others, since they're supposedly "vintage correct" Foxx TM clones, while Fuller added slight tweaks to his, which also tracks a bit better.

In other news, EQD Fuzz Master General Legacy RI -> ordered! ✅

I’m kinda circling one of these. I had plans to breadboard and build a rangemaster clone but don’t have the time right now. This gets me that plus an extra level of color if I want it.
