NAD: Fryette PS-100 Power Station

Nice score! Might I recommend grabbing a Fryette Cyclops to go with it then you can switch between using the PS100 with your Plexi or using it as a power amp for your FM9 at the press of a button.

Ahhh, I just thought it was a footswitch for the two channels! I’ll go check it out, thanks!

I've been trying to resist the urge to get an LXii to throw in the rack with the Axe FX, and my will is so weak right now that even this thread is a trigger.

No weird doubling-up on impedance curves or anything since you're using a tube amp?

Nothing is standing out as unusual to me, I’ve still mostly only played the Plexi through it but I think I’d have to have the actual amp to A/B with before I’d notice anything I’d cite as unusual or off sounding. I’ve tweaked the impedance curves when going into real cabs before, just using the Duncan PS170 as the power amp, while there was some tonal changes that vary depending on the cab, they really seemed to change the feel more than the sound.

I just fired everything up, I’m going to play around with them and report back. I suspect it’ll be much of the same thing; just a change in the feel something I’d only notice if I had the actual amp to A/B to.

Well, look at it this way, if you did, you’d never have to think about power for it again and you could get that much more enjoyment out of it!!! Even better, stereo enjoyment!

If you asked me right now, I’m more likely to grab a 2nd one of these for a stereo rig than I am buying an amp right now for around the same price. I’m predicting a whole 2nd wave of “I never need to think about amps again!” :rofl

I already have a Mesa 20/20 and a Marshall 9100. The Fryette combines the desirable features of both units into one. I don't need it-the little 20/20 is actually the perfect wattage for the volume my band typically plays at. But it's not transparent, so there is a bit of additional coloration added to everything. Not bad, but because I know it's there it becomes part of the process of justification.

What I really should do is pull the V30s out of my 3/4 back Mesa 2x12 and put a pair of creambacks in there, then call it a day.

But this isn't about practicality. New, shiny, bored, YouTube deep dives...

had this one years ago. it was humming terribly, iirc around 100hz. wrote to fryette - no reply, saw others with the same problem on tgp and returned. glorious device otherwise, sad.
I had a hum when i first got my ps-2 - it wasn't terrible but it was enough to notice when playing single notes etc. I solved mine by making sure it was plugged into the same power block as all my other gear.

The PS is designed to be flatter than a typical guitar tube amp, more like a hifi tube amp. That said it also has presence and depth controls to tune it a bit.

So yes, you are going to get a little bit of extra SIC effect with it, but I think most people don’t perceive it to be enough to be an issue, and it can be a plus.

I been preaching it since the day the PS first released but it is truly the greatest piece of auxiliary guitar gear ever in my book

And mine is just the basic bitch original model (don't care; still glorious)

I’ll likely never utilize the 2nd channel, the only reason I went with the PS100 and not the PS50 was for the extra 50 watts.

Still on the PS1 here. I love it. If I need the extra 50 watts, I leave the attenuator at home :)

If you want to run the FM9 with the power amp modelling off, you can get some power amp goodness with the Power Station by using the self attenuation feature. Basically, plug one speaker out into the Amp In, and other other speaker out into a cab. Make sure your impedance settings are correct of course.

Works like a charm.

Yep, though I could be wrong about this but I think the Depth/Presence and switches on the side for Warmth/Depth/Bight/etc only come into play when a load is introduced to the Power Station. I want to say the Line In goes straight to the power section because the idea was an attenuated amp might need some adjustments to sound natural, as where anything going into the Line In will most likely be coming from a pre-amp or modeler where the circuitry of the Power Station won’t color anything like it could with the attenuator.

That essentially gives you the impedance curve of the cab that’s plugged in, correct?

Yes.

Edit: I am not looking at Axe Edit now. Is there an option in the Amp Block for a flat impedance curve? That might work well too.

Anyhow, self attenuation is a cool feature. Give it a whirl.

I’m not sure, for some reason I’m thinking there is, or someone noted at some point how to make one.

Yes, there is a flat impedance curve (I think it is called resistive load). I think it sounds better to use a standard impedance curve when sending signal from the Axe-FX to the Power Station.

I don’t use the LXII for powering a modeler but I do use int in a WDW rig with my amps. Great sounding power amp.

I could be wrong, but I THINK the switches impact the load and the depth and presence are similar to on a regular tube amp in that they adjust the negative feedback for the low and high frequencies. Reducing or increasing the NFB will reduce or increase the damping factor for those frequencies and influence how much the SIC impacts the PS amplifier. Anyone have a schematic?

Anyway, I haven’t had my hands on a PS in quite a while, but my impression was that what color the amp added was less than what you would get from a normal guitar amp power section, and it sounded and felt better, more “real” to me with power amp sim on than off. Obviously YMMV so play around with it.
